THOUSANDS of runners laced up their trainers for the New Forest Marathon.

The 2016 event started and finished from New Park Showground, Brockenhurst , with the route taking runners through the heart of the New Forest National Park.

And with the full marathon, half marathon, 5k and 10k events, as well as a 6k walk and a 1.5k event for children, there was something for everyone.

According to co-organiser Andy Daish, from ORA Events, around 4,500 people took part in at least one of the races on Sunday.

"It's gone remarkably well and the feedback from runners about how well organised the whole event was has been fantastic," he added.

"There's been a great atmosphere throughout the day with thousands of people coming along to cheer on their family and friends as well.

"I think lots of people really appreciated that we have taken on board their feedback from last year's event to make the marathon the best it can be."

The event has become popular not just with experienced runners but also those people who just want to keep fit or raise money for charity.

Money raised will go to the New Forest Marathon Community Fund, supporting community groups in the New Forest with projects to get people active.

"In the last three decades the New Forest Marathon has donated over £1.25 million to support over 100 local good causes and community groups from the New Forest area," said Andy.

"To help this pot grow and to continue to support all the superb organisations that exist within the New Forest and surrounding area, we have set up the New Forest Marathon Community Fund.

“The idea is that this one day will continue to inspire activity all year.

"So far this year we have supported 16 different projects with the aim of encouraging people to be active.

"Hopefully the money raised from this event will help make a real difference to the community."

Hundreds of volunteers from clubs and community groups also helped as marshals and behind the scenes to ensure the event went off without a glitch.
