SOUTHAMPTON students came agonisingly close to making the final of the British Universities & Colleges Sport snooker championships in Leeds.

It was the third year running that the side had been knocked out at the last-four stage at the Northern Snooker Centre.

And the newly-elected club president collected the silver medal in one of the individual competitions.

The University of Southampton’s first team progressed through the group stages and whitewashed Warwick 6-0 in the quarter-finals.

But Ashley Rogers, Kurtis Haberstraw, skipper Mike Andrews, Jack Dady and Michael Tam lost 6-5 on a tiebreak frame to the University of East Anglia, the eventual champions.

Dady was nominated to play the decider and led England captain Nikolas Charalambous for most of the frame until he went in-off the penultimate red, which allowed his opponent to clear down to the pink.

The university’s other two teams were knocked out in the last-16 of the Shield event. The seconds lost 6-5 to Plymouth and the thirds 6-2 to Warwick’s third string.

Jordan Brown, who takes over the presidency of the Southampton University Snooker & Pool Club from Ashley Rogers next season, lost 2-1 in the final of the Individual Trophy to England B team member Max Faulkner.

Polish international Weronika Nowicka and Lawrence Mann went out in the last-eight.

Andrews and Dady both made last-16 exits in the Individual Championship.
