LOCAL juniors collected awards during the Angling Trust Wessex Region Marine agm held at Ringwood.

They included 11-year-old Oliver Warren, a member of the Lymington club, who won the junior of the year award for the second consecutive year

Eleven-year-old Flora Munden, also a member of the Lymington club, picked up the award for the best specimen caught from a boat with a 2lb 7.75oz trigger fish.

Curtis Driver, 10, a member of Poole Dolphins. picked up the award for the best specimen caught from the shore with a 2lb 6oz.

All club secretaries are reminded to submit any fish caught by their junior members to the Wessex Region junior representative Neil Wilson.

The Wessex Region's long standing secretary, Richard Prosser, stepped down at the meeting. For his support and hard work over the years he has been appointed as a life vice president. Brian Bleese is the new secretary.

Darren Perrett (Southampton) sampled some great sport while out chasing the rays.

During his first session targeting the shoreline along Southampton Water he beached an 11lb 6oz thorneback ray, a cracking early session fish. For the second trip he headed to a west Hampshire beach where he bagged five small-eyed-rays up to 7lb 5oz.

West Bexington was the setting for the third round of the pegged open Samalite League where dogfish, pout, poor cod, rockling, whiting, smoothhound, undulate rays and small-eyed-rays figured in the catch.

The heaviest fish in A section was a 13lb 12oz undulate ray caught by Mike Brown from Southampton while the heaviest fish in B section was a 10lb 5oz small-eyed-ray bagged by Ian Dancey.

Results: A zone, 1st Mike Brown 21lb 11.25oz, 2nd Paul Phillips 6lb 14oz, 3rd Dave Lane 6lb 13oz. B zone, 1st Rob Marshall 19lb 9oz, 2nd Ian Dancey 19lb 7.5oz, =3rd Daniel Crump & Richard Dorgan 10lb 4oz.

Steve Lawrence was presented with the Poole Community Championship award from the Mayor of Poole.

Given in three categories, he recorded the highest level of a gold award for services to the local angling community.

For nearly two decades he has tirelessly organised the Wessex Junior Flounder League which often attracts over 20 youngsters on a Friday evening.

AROUND THE CLUBS

SHIRLEY SAC: A shallow boat competition provided some reasonable action, the catch included dogfish, whiting, undulate rays and plaice. Adrian Groves topped the podium with 17lb 8oz, included in his catch was the day’s heaviest fish, an 11lb 6oz undulate ray.

Others: 2nd Bob Patterson 7lb 2oz, =3rd Carol Groves, Ryan Beal & Steve Southwell 6lb. Top junior, Jack Bryson 5lb.

GOSPORT & DISTRICT AC: Dogfish, whiting, pout and whiting supplied the action during a junior catch & release shore competition.

Results: 1st Samuel James 339cm, 2nd Adam Griscti 310cm, 3rd Ben Eggleton 293cm, 4th Harry Gille 289cm.
