Local boat and shore anglers have been sampling some great sport with Southampton's England Boat International Colin Searles landing a colourful ballan wrasse.

Sam Delaney (Fareham) got on the ray trail while targeting the shoreline along Southampton Water where he beached a nice thorneback ray which took a large bluey/sandeel bait.

Bob Smith (Boscombe & Southbourne) romped to victory during the flatfish open fished along Chesil Beach after landing a brace of sole measuring 60cm to collect the 500 top prize.

The event, organised by Weymouth Angling Centre, attracted 161 competitors although the action was far from good with just four plaice, one dab and the two sole recorded.

Gary Bowler collected £250 as the runner-up with a 45cm plaice.

Others: Glen Short (Ringwood) 42cm plaice, Adam Cullingford 41cm plaice, Andy K Mills 24cm plaice, Mike Tanetta 23cm dab.

Pairs: 1st Bob Smith & Andy K Mills 94cm, 2nd Gary Bowler & Kyle Bowler 45cm, 3rd Glen Short & Allan Jones 42cm.

With the Wessex Tackle & Guns Spring League now completed, Pete Christopher (Poole) collected the £120 top prize along within the trophy directly after the bonus competition had finished.

Toby Oldfield (Christchurch) was the runner-up with 51pts followed by Malcolm Parsons (50pts), Jeffery Fisk (45cm), Chris Rogers (45pts) and Brian Fooks (44cm).

Sole, plaice, bass, pout, smoothhound and whiting supplied the action during the bonus match which was won by Eddie Painter with 183 cm.

Others: Brian Fooks 171cm, Chris Albiston 155cm.

The pool for the longest round fish in A section as won by Dennis Holton with a 39cm smoothhound while the flatfish pool was won by Steve Clark with a 26cm sole.

Albiston collected the pool in B section for the longest round fish with a 39 smoothhound while Andy Mitchell recorded the longest flatfish with a 26cm sole.

Christchurch & District FC catch & release Winter League finished with a midweek evening match fished between Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers where smoothhound, whiting, pout, sole, rays and dogfish all figured in the catch.

Toby Oldfield was the night’s top performer with 366cm followed by Keith Mills (355cm), Tom Bagnall (270cm) and Gavin Sloper (230cm). The overall series winner was Tom Bagnall with 15 penalty points ahead of Gavin Sloper and Keith Mills who both finished with 16 penalty points.

AROUND THE CLUBS

FORD SPORTS SAC: An evening competition fished along Southampton’s Weston Shore produced a smattering of dogfish, rays, pout and flounders, the heaviest fish was a 4lb 1oz thorneback ray bagged by Paul Coleman.

Results: 1st Steve Wicks Eales 4lb 6oz, 2nd Paul Coleman 4lb 1oz, 3rd Keith Warner 3lb 9.5oz, 4th Allan Hickman 3lb 4oz, 5th Clive Hickman 2lb 3oz, 6th Dudley Bryant 2lb 1oz.

LYMINGTON & DISTRICT SFC: Dogfish and pouting completely dominated during the monthly Shingle Bank League competition fished at Milford.

Results: 1st Paul Watson 5lb 14.5oz, 2nd Arron Bridges 5lb 5.25oz, 3rd John Sloper 4lb 7.25oz, 4th Chris Ellis 3lb, 5th Terry Kempton 2lb 5.25oz.
