Fielding practice is definitely off limits for Ventnor’s leg weary fielders this week after the Islanders’ two teams suffered an afternoon to forget in the field on the opening day of the season.

Between them, the two teams conceded a staggering 721 runs, taking 11 wickets – and, not surprisingly, losing both games heavily.

Ventnor 1sts had their bowling put to the sword at May’s Bounty, where Basingstoke & North Hants piled up 307-7 in 50 overs of British Gas Southern League Division 1 cricket.

They made 154 in reply and were beaten by 153 runs.

But that defeat paled into insignificance when Lymington nailed Ventnor’s 2nd XI attack for an enormous 414-4 in the Hampshire League’s opening fixture.

Terry Crabb smashed 207 and Oli Kelly 108 in a huge 351-run opening stand as Lymington made their way to 414-4.

Ventnor lost their first six wickets for 30 runs before being dismissed for 104.

They lost by a colossal 310 runs!
