England T20 leg spinner Mason Crane hit 65 and took two wickets during an 18-over spell, but was unable to force a victory for the Hampshire Academy against St Cross.

The Winchester-based side were forced to play with ten men after Matt Stokes was hospitalised with a dislocated left index finger in the first over of the match.

St Cross comfortably played out time for a draw at 224-6 after the Academy had posted a daunting 335-4 in the British Gas Southern Premier League.

Teenage duo Cole Campbell and Tom Scriven each hit 80 for the Academy, with Kent loan man Joe Weatherley responding with 86 for the Winchester visitors.

St Cross found themselves fighting an uphill battle from the start, with Stokes shelling one of the side’s three morning bungled slip catches off unlucky Dutch all-rounder Logan Van Beek.

He returned from casualty with his finger in a splint and two stitches inserted in a gash.

The Southampton Solent University student, who had helped Guernsey beat Denmark last week, could miss the remainder of the season.

Academy openers Miles Kantolinna (22) and Felix Organ (37) led a charmed life before both fell to catches off Asher Hart (2-50).

By then, the Academy – facing ten-man fielding opposition - were headed towards a decent total.

Tom Scriven (80) and Crane (65), enjoying his first knock since May, shared a 117-run stand.

Hampton School prospect Cole Campbell enhanced his prospects of an Academy deal with an unbeaten 80, while ESCA Bunbury Under-15 Festival bound Fletcha Middleton chipped in with 38 not out as the Academy reached 335-4 in 63.5 overs.

Predictably, Weatherley led the St Cross response, his 86 including one straight six back over Crane’s head and 13 boundaries.

Tom Foyle (25) and Van Beek (29) played handy support roles as St Cross progressed to 137-1 before promising left-armer Jack Campbell (4-71) prompted a mini-wobble which saw four wickets fall for 21 runs.

Les than 12 hours after his 3-15 return steered Hampshire to a NatWest T20- Blast victory over Middlesex, Crane (2-46) wheeled away for 18 overs.

But with Scotsman Chris Sole and Scriven nursing injuries, the Academy found themselves short of bowling options and Harry Foyle (27 not out) was able to navigate the last hour and secure St Cross a draw at 224-6.
