SALISBURY made yet another contribution to flat racing history today - appropriately on an afternoon principally devoted to juvenile talent.

For the first time, racing's hierarchy gave the course special dispensation to enable a £20,000 plus race to be run in two divisions.

And it was rewarded with an impressive debut from Herecomesthesun in the first, who quickened clear in the final furlong to run out a length and a half winner.

"We have always held her in quite high regard and I was hopeful," winning trainer Archie Watson said of the 150,000 euro purchase.

"Some win first time, some run green, and I wasn't getting too excited. But she travelled well and will hopefully improve for the run."

The Radley Stakes at Newbury and the Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket are her next ventures.

Unlike Herecomesthesun, Clairette holds no fancy entries this season but looks a filly with a future. She also belied her inexperience to take the second division by a similar margin.

"Kieran (Shoemark) says she was very green but still did enough in front and every time something came at her, she went on again," said trainer Roger Charlton. "I like her and she will get a mile next year."

The Hannon yard won the feature race of the day - nothing unusual in that, but returned at 40/1!

And you probably got an even better price on Anna Nerium at halfway in the six furlong group race before Tom Marquand threaded his way through the field to snatch the spoils on the line.

"She's just an improving filly," explained Richard Hannon snr, deputising for his son. "She's beautifully bred and she will be even better over seven furlongs or a mile."

She's due to run off a mark of 81 in a nursery at next week's St Leger meeting at Doncaster.

The chief supporting race went to Thafeera, who is on a roll after being dropped to six furlong trips. She cruised into the lead to notch her third consecutive race.

But with Shadwell Stud's policy with fillies, she will almost certainly head for the paddocks at the season's close.
