Hefty rays continue to make their presence felt from a number of local beaches.

Ian James (Southampton) landed a huge undulate ray while targeting Gillkicker Point to set a new personal best.

James baited a 3/0 hook with a whole squid while fishing a little way to the left of the slipway to tempt the 15lb 11oz ray.

A number of hefty thorneback rays were beached during a Lock, Stock and Tackle midweek catch & release match fished at Browndown.

Luke Choate recorded the day’s heaviest at 9lb - the first thorneback he had ever caught. Other species to figure on the night included flounders, sole, whiting, gurnard, spotted rays, smoothhound and silver eels. Top rod on the night was Justin Rouland with 343cm followed by Luke Choate (244cm), Darren Dixon (241cm) and Nick Wright (238cm).

The final round Lymington bait supplied boat series, supported by Loni’s of New Milton, was fished out from Poole.

Ed Taylor won on the day and also clinched the series. There were 131 fish recorded which included 16 differing species. A trio of codling netted Dave Lane the £1,000 top prize during the annual Weymouth Angling Centre cod only open shore competition fished at Abbotsbury.

Mike Carter (Poole) won £500 for coming second and recording the heaviest fish, followed by Michael Stockley.

Eleven-year-old Chloe Bryson (Shirley SAC) won the latest round of the Angling Trust Wessex Marine junior fish of month award.

She caught a 1lb 2.5oz sole closely followed by nine-year-old Jack Bryson with a 1lb 2oz sole.

Lymington member Oliver Warren, 13, was third with a 13oz mackerel.

Sixty competitors lined the beaches between Hamworthy and Rockley for the second round of the Wessex senior Flounder League.

Steve Clark pocketed £84 for topping the podium with a brace of fish weighing 1lb 14.5oz.

Malcolm Parson (Bournemouth & District SAA) collected £70 in pools for the heaviest single fish weighing 1lb 8.5oz. Results: 1st Steve Clark 1lb 14.5oz, 2nd, Steve Lawrence 1lb 11.25oz, 3rd James Haskall 1lb 9.25oz.

SHIRLEY SAC: Rough conditions restricted a shallow boat competition to the more sheltered waters of Southampton Water where just a few pout, whiting and dogfish were recorded. Results: 1st Barry Instrell 4lb 6oz, 2nd Jim Merritt 4lb 1oz, 3rd Adrian Groves 3lb 9oz, 4th Bob Patterson 2lb 10oz.

LYMINGTON & DISTRICT SFC: Scad and sole dominated during a shore competition fished along the Warren Edge section at Southbourne. Colin Saunders was the top performer with 1lb 2oz. Others: 2nd Paul Watson 1lb 0-75oz, 2nd Terry Kempton 13.25oz, 4th Danny Panks 12.25oz.

GOSPORT & DISTRICT AC: Members travelled to Hayling Island for their latest shore competition where dogfish, pout, red mullet, silver eels and whiting figured in the catch. Results: 1st Iain Ellis 11lb 8oz, 2nd Dave Fisher 3lb 14.5oz, 3rd Ray Brenton 2lb 8.5oz, 4th Darren Phillips 2lb .25oz, 5th Stuart Donnelly 2lb 6oz.

SANDOWN & LAKE AC: Peter Kingswell topped the podium during a competition fished from the local pier. He recorded a 10lb 3oz undulate ray and an 8lb 3oz small-eyed-ray. Others: Simon Dillon 6lb 5oz, 3rd Pat Wickham 14.5oz.

CHRISTCHURCH & DISTRICT FC: Portman Ravine was the setting for a doubles league match where rays, pout and sole figured in the catch.

Winning pairs: Ian Thomson/Lee Roberts 3lb 5.5oz, Robin Thorne/Ian Lockyer 2lb 2oz, John & Gavin Sloper 4lb 14.5oz and Doug Hawkins/Andy Hardman 3lb 0.75oz.
