SOUTHAMPTON Diving Academy won six gold medals at the recent Armada Cup.

A team of 20 divers travelled to Plymouth to compete in the fast-paced three-day event attended by clubs from the whole of the UK under the watchful eyes of coaching team Jack Clewlow and Matt Roberts,

The standard was high with some Commonwealth divers in attendance as well as young divers testing themselves for the first time at this level.

With a preliminary round in each event on the 1m springboard, the 3m springboard and platform, the top six divers progressed to the finals.

The competition was fierce but the young SDA squad held their own under pressure and came back with plenty of spoils to keep Southampton firmly planted on the UK diving map.

Tilly Brown won four of the squad’s six gold medals and the first in the 1m synchronised diving while partnering Summer Radcliffe from Plymouth diving club in the Under-13 girls event.

Girls 14+: New pairing Maya Kutty and Evelyna Johnson also took an unexpected gold on the 3m,

Girls 12/13 years: Tilly was the star of the meet, going on to repeat her success in the synchro in all of her individual events.

She won a further three gold medals representing a clean sweep on the 1m, 3m and Platform in the category.

Team mate Dulcie Wilson was hot on her heels making all three finals and taking a bronze on the platform.

Boys 12/13: Milo French made all three finals and took gold on the platform, and bronze on both the 1m and 3m springboards in a strong group.

Oliver Covell also performed well making it to the 1m finals, finishing a creditable fourth in the final.

Girls 14/15: Evie Johnson was in fighting spirit against a tough field, taking gold on the 3m and silver on the 1m and platform.

Team-mate Maya Kutty was equally fired up making all three finals, and taking the bronze on the 1m.

Boys 14/15: Nathan Bull performed at his best to take silver on the 1m and 3m springboards and bronze on the platform.

Alex Walton made the 1m and platform finals and Ethan Bennett also reached the platform final.

Boys 10/11: The youngsters gave a good account of themselves, as for most this was their first major competition.

Reuben Havenga defied the odds, making the 5m Platform final and finishing fifth.

Girls 10/11: Anjali Kutty dived well despite missing two weeks of training due to illness.

She made all three finals and took bronze in the 5m Platform.

Coach Jack Clewlow said: “This was a youthful and inexperienced team, but nonetheless our results were impressive across the board. I hope this is the start of an exciting and successful competitive career for these young divers.”
