RICHARD Bland is nervously waiting to hear if he will make it into the US Open, after narrowly missing out on an automatic place in the major.

The Southampton golfer took part in the international qualifying event at Walton Heath on Monday.

After reaching a seven-man play-off for the final five places available, he lost out when Swede Peter Hanson aced the second play-off hole to seal the last spot.

However, Bland finished as the first alternate from the event.

He will now have to wait and see where he ranks in the list of reserves for the tournament, which takes place on the Bethpage Black course, New York, from June 18 to 21.

“The ultimate spot hasn’t been decided, but hopefully I should find out within the next week or so what the chances are I will get in,” said the Stoneham pro.

“If I’m one, two or three I will have a reasonable chance.

“If a couple of the guys who qualified get into the top 50 in the world their spot would open up for me, so there are a couple of avenues that could help me out.”
