SOUTHAMPTON rower James Foad says not being selected in the Great Britain men’s eight crew again for the forthcoming second World Cup in Munich (June 19-21), will give him a “kick in the right direction”.
Foad helped the men’s eight to a bronze medal at the first World Cup event of the season in Banyoles, Spain last month.
But the Woolston-based oarsman was one two rowers replaced for Munich, as part of a squad reshuffle designed to give as many newcomers as possible the opportunity to race at World Cup level.
Instead, the 22-year-old will compete in a second men’s four in Germany, with the first quartet expected to be the preferred choice for the World Championships in Poland in August.
Foad though is hoping to turn the negative of missing out on the men’s eight into a positive.
“I was little bit disappointed to be taken out of the eight,” he said.
“We are now in the bottom boat so we have all got to go out there and do something special to prove we should be in the eight.
“The pair and the four are set as they are and will be going to the World Championships.
“So the eight is the last boat open.
“Missing out just gives you that kick in the right direction and makes you ensure you are working hard enough. I have put a line under it and will use it as a challenge to try and move up.”
