Charity fisherman land a bumper donation

A BUMPER field of 172 anglers raised £1,800 for Naomi House children’s hospice while competing at Weston Shore in the Fords Sports, in conjunction with the Meon Valley Lions Club, charity open.

The £500 top prize was won by Southampton’s England international John Brown, who bagged a brace of flatties together weighing 2lb 11oz, writes CHRIS CLARK.

He also shared the optional pool of £160 awarded for the heaviest single fish with Darren Wilson (Havant). They both recorded 1lb 11.25oz flounders. The solitary flounder bagged by Wilson also won him £250 as the runner-up in the competition. In third position was Andrew Brown (Southampton) with 1lb 8.5oz.

The top junior was ten-year-old Zak Stokes. He landed a single flounder of 13oz to beat elder brother Brandon (10oz) into second.

l A superb specimen flounder of 2lb 15oz was recorded by Martin Hurcombe (Southampton) while targeting the Gypsy Lane section at Lepe. The 32-year-old baited a two-hook flapping rig, armed with size 1 Aberdeen hooks with ragworm. He also landed two smaller flounders.

l The first round of the Samalite League was held along the Ferry Bridge section of Chesil Beach where smoothhound, rockling, dogfish, whiting, poor cod, pout and pollack supplied the action. The night’s heaviest fish was a 4lb 2oz smoothhound bagged by Darren Stevens. Results A zone: 1 Ben Bradstock 5lb 15.75oz, 2 James Lane 4lb 3.25oz, 3 Joe Arch 4lb 3oz, 4 Darren Newland 3lb 3.5oz.

B zone: 1 Darren Stevens 10lb 5.75oz, 2 Richard Dorgan 4lb 13.5oz, 3 Colin Carey 4lb 13.25oz, 4 Matt Finn 4lb 7.5oz.

The next round will be held at Abbotsbury on February 11.
