GREAT Britain’s 14 & Under boys’ tennis squad have been crowned European champions under the guidance of Chris Wilkinson.
The Southampton-born former British number one captained the team that lifted the Tennis Europe Winter Cup, in Corregio, Italy.
In a thrilling final against Sweden that went right down to a deciding doubles match, Wilkinson’s charges claimed a 2-1 victory to emerge as kings of Europe.
“I’m delighted,” said Wilkinson, who is director of tennis at Lee-on-the-Solent Tennis Squash and Fitness Club.
“The odds were against us. We had a strong team, but when you looked at some of the other teams around, you would have said it would be tough for us to win.
“But the momentum helped carry the boys on. It was one hell of an achievement."
