Portsmouth to begin 2012/13 season on -10 points in League One

Fratton Park Fratton Park

Portsmouth have been told they must start next season in npower League One with a 10-point deduction.

The Football League said today it will accept Pompey's membership provided whoever buys the club complies with a number of conditions, notably another points deduction.

Portsmouth were also docked 10 points last season after entering administration for the second time in two years and were eventually relegated from the Championship.

Last month they moved a step closer to coming out of administration after creditors voted in favour of former owner Balram Chainrai's Company Voluntary Arrangement proposal, while the Pompey Supporters' Trust are also bidding to take over the cash-strapped club.

As well as starting next term on minus 10, the Football League say Portsmouth must agree that only a limited proportion of the secured debt from the previous club can be carried forward into the new company as secured debt.

They must pay all their football creditors in full, unless mutually acceptable compromise agreements are put in place.

Finally, Pompey will also face a range of other restrictions on playing budgets, future borrowing and loan repayments for the next five seasons.

A Football League statement read: "The Board of The Football League has agreed to make an offer of membership to the eventual purchaser of Portsmouth Football Club.

"The offer is subject to the successful bidder accepting a number of conditions that seek to ensure the sporting integrity of league football and the financial viability of the club going forward.

"The Football League Board has absolute discretion as to whether to admit any new company as a member of The League. In doing so, it has to strike a balance between giving a club another chance and the effect this has on sporting competition between clubs."

Pompey's administrator Trevor Birch promptly issued a statement branding the League's decision "very harsh" and hopes it can be reversed.

He said: "We are extremely disappointed that the Football League has decided to impose yet another penalty on the club.

"I think most people would agree that the 10-point deduction imposed last season was sufficient, particularly as it played a huge part in the club's relegation to League One.

"The fans, players and staff have suffered enough for something for which they weren't responsible. We feel it is unjustified for the club to be punished further.

"We've made it clear to the League that Portsmouth needs all the help it can get at the moment, which makes today's decision very harsh.

"I'm confident, though, that the club will bounce back from this latest setback. It's not a club that gives up that easily.

"We will have further discussions with the League in order to explore whether we can give them more comfort, particularly with regards to the old CVA creditors, and thereby have the decision reversed in respect of a points deduction.

"We will continue to do all we can to give Portsmouth the best possible chance of survival."

Birch added that the club have made significant inroads into slashing their wage bill.

Today Hayden Mullins joined Birmingham and Aaron Mokoena agreed to terminate his contract while Luke Varney and David Norris are also expected to leave within the next few days.

My thoughts entirely, and the 10 points deduction is only one of many conditions imposed on them for acceptance to league 1 with a new owner

Boo hoo hoo, it's not our fault...
It was those orrible owners who spent all the dosh on a team of internationals and got us cup finals and european nights at Fratton.
Those very same players who were hero worshipped not so long ago are now parasitic scum who are holding the club to ransom because they want what is owed to them.
This should now be the end, the life support should now be turned off...... R.I.P. pfc

Having read the FL response I do wonder if BC will actually get just as much of his filthy lucre if he was to just let the corpse be liquidated? I certainly cannot see the supporters trust managing to save the club but we shall see. A little time to go but, to all the PTS NUTJOBS in TSWF, I think a beer or twenty is in the offing. I was very suprised they only got -10 before. This is totally in line with the precdents set at other clubs- Leeds, Bournemouth, Plymouth, Luton Town, and Rotherham. This is absolutely correct, and they are a total embarassment to the Football League - and it remains on a knife edge with only 8 players on books the football league has no choice but to push this -and push a decision- or face a disaster if they started playing and could not complete the fixtures!! This is spot on. Hang on didn't we face the start of a season the same way? Hard lines skates!

Exactly!! What with the Rangers Fiasco and the way clubs are finacially teetering, they have to do this. Coventry, Birmingham, and Others all are looking shaky, and FA/ FL have to take this firm line. ts more than fair.

This is a broadside at Chanerai too- Its stump up the cash or not, same ith thi so call "trust" nonsense, they couldn't continue to fund the club - it would be a one off thing, next season they will have very low gates too, with hardly any season tickets sold (because of the situation) .... revenues will be meagre!! This could go the way of Rangers, and Blue Square south , or Wessex League may be on the cards! LOL

Golden_Salamander says...

In general I support the Football League decision it has been long overdue, with the exception that the -10 points SHOULD HAVE BEEN GREATER.
.
In effect they have written off over £100m of debt without paying anything to the Taxman (Hospitals, Police, Schools etc.) so their punishment show have been greater.
.
The Football League SHOULD have also asked "theFA" to remove all those F.A. Cup games from the records, as we all know THEY WERE CHEATING at the time.
.
Finally is this going to be the end of that "long thread" on SaintsWeb (thanks for starting it DH), what are we all going to do now ?

I have a hunch the dispute with FA Cup hero 'King' Kanu could well be the straw that breaks this donkey's back. They've **** him off to the extent that he won't accept a compromise and it could well drag them under.

That said, I think the fact the surrounding land formely owned by the arms dealer is now up for sale does slightly increase the chances of a middle eastern billionaire stepping in, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Haha. Their whining about the points misses the, erm, point by about a million miles. There's no way in the world the trust can raise enough to pay off football debts by the start of the season (these dwarf the amount you would need to buy the club itself) and why on earth would Chainrai bother if he's only allowed to transfer a fraction of the £18m he's owed into the debt of the post-CVA club?

Unless someone else enters the race to buy them there's no way they'll be a Football League club next season. O well, we did always say they were Pompey till July.

And let this all be a lesson to all the moaning 'fans' complaining about a lack transfer activity at Southampton. We do things right at our club.

He'll always have the Cup Final DVD to keep him warm at night, he could do a few signings coz he appears on over bloody half of it! Could this be the worlds hollowest victory?

The club has been ruined by their so called "heroes" Redknapp et al.

Surely he must have known when he was signing superstars on ridiculous wages that the books would never balance?
