Balram Chainrai pulls out of deal to buy Portsmouth FC

Fratton Park Fratton Park

THE FORMER owner of Portsmouth Football Club has withdrawn his offer to buy the club again.

Balram Chainrai's Portpin firm have pulled out of the deal, meaning the club is in serious danger of being liquated.

Pompey started the season with a 3-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle last night.

Now, only the Pompey Supporters Trust remain as prospective buyers.

In a statement to Sky Sports News, Chainrai said: "Portpin Ltd regrets to announce that it is withdrawing its bid for Portsmouth Football Club.

"Unfortunately, our efforts to save the club once more from extinction have hit a wall of rejection and lacking co-operation from the administrator and other interested parties.

"We are not the ones who have caused the club to collapse and we are not the ones to choose PKF as administrators .

"As history has recorded, we sold the club over a year ago after saving it from liquidation and unfortunately found ourselves again fighting to try and save the club from another liquidation.

"Through this administration process over the last six months we have always had the club's best interest in mind - unlike many parties who were involved in the process.

"We repeatedly encouraged the administrator to find a new, willing and able buyer to take over the club - unfortunately he was unsuccessful in this job and couldn't find a buyer despite his promises!!

"Later he approached us to be his safety net to save the club as he couldn't find a buyer. We agreed in the effort to avoid liquidation of the club.

"At this moment in time, we feel that:

  •  the negative criticism and lack of support for our takeover by the fans of this club.
  •  the fact that the administrators do not want to compromise on their unrealistic fees.
  •  the fact that suddenly the club has received additional huge football creditors' claims from former players and management such as Hughes, Brown, Kanu, and Lampitt and more.
  •  the fact that all the money from the parachute payment which were supposed to carry the club for the next two seasons was spent and committed by the administrator on players' compromises and fees : total £12million.
  •  the fact that the Football League has decided to deduct 10 points for no reasonable reason and by its decisions didn't show any willingness to help in saving this troubled club.
  •  the fact that the supporters' trust which we met and we voiced our support for their takeover bid could not raise the funds to satisfy the administrator or the Football League and the loan that was promised them by the council had unrealistic terms.
  •  the fact that the club did not get any  real support from any official they were all very good at creating headlines.
  •  and finally the last straw yesterday afternoon the manager told the press before the season starts that he is sure of another relegation.

"All of these facts have left us in a position that we no longer want to fight this battle, we have zero support to save the club therefore we formally withdraw our bid and our honest attempt at saving the club. We will sleep well knowing we did our utmost to save the club.

"We welcome and will assist anyone, including the supporters trust to try and save the club in the coming days."

Terrible news, he was the one who'd guarantee many more years of suffering with eventual relegation to the conference south.
Now they will start again with a clean slate and enjoy some relative success with almost certain promotions.
The debt is far too great for the trust to realistically take control.
Oh well looking foward to Sunday COYR

None of this is Chainrai's fault all he did was lend Al Faraj 17 mill, which he didn't pay back. The debt is secured on Fratton so guess they better start looking for a local park to play in.

That's what I call total dedication and the reason they are regarded as the greatest fans ever!!!!!!!!
The club had £150m's worth of debt and the deluded blue few think that by raising £1.65m every things gonna be alright.

It's disappointing because, as others have said, the South Coast derby is one of the best in the country. As much as I enjoy schadenfreude it's never nice to see a football team go bust.

If a fan pledges cash to save his club, any club, he deserves repect. So I take my hat off to 1,650 ... if that's the correct figure.

That is a very ubfortunate photo of the ground as well. Did a photographer get paid for that??

I am now getting fed up hearing about them when there are more interesting clubs to talk about nearer our homeland such as Totton or Eastleigh.

While there are still people who are owed millions of pounds this story will drag on. The club will probably disappear eventually. Nobody seems to want this club, it's ground, or anything at all. I hope the 1.650 move their allegiance to Chichester, or perhaps Havant, or maybe take up cross stitch.

By the way, have Subbuteo dropped them from the team catalogue yet? Or are they still doubling up as Everton?

I am with you on that part - any fan who pledges to save his club deserves respect. However with only 1650 pledges there is nowhere near enough to satisfy any creditors so I doubt any deal will be done. I guess that only leaves for the club to wind up, and AFC Portsmouth to rise from the ashes....

Well I guess we can find something else to target. I mean, it doesn't even have to be a football team; just something that we don't like. I've got quite a long list: olives, war, cancer, the destruction of the environment, racism, the widening socio-economic gap in post-capitalist society and, above all of that, Ed Sheeran.

People on here saying who can we hate now, well remember, that crappy city still exists, the Stakes are still there, we will always have a rivalry, it doesnt have to be just football, never has for me.
And the derbies, there was never really a likelyhood of a derby game for a long time.
It will take time for them to put a Newco club together, certainly wont be for the coming season, and as there will be a gap, it will be more than likely that at best they will be accepted in nothing higher than the Southern League South in 2013/14

That photo has got to be someone having a laugh?!!

On a serious note, despite the fact I'm a Saints supporter, I feel sorry for the fans and I wouldn't wish to see the end of Saints versus Portsmouth games.

The fact remains however that Portsmouth FC was bungled by a number of people, including and specifically Mandaric and Redknapp.

Too much money was spent getting PFC the FA Cup and players they could not afford and trying to adopt a position that was unsustainable without the back up of a modern ground and set up. They got it all wrong and people like Redknapp should have known better when he was too busy trying to buy himself glory with money the club clearly could not afford.

I could see this all happening when Portsmouth fans were laughing in my face about Saints being in trouble a few years back. If I and thousands of other people could see that PFC were on a road to nowhere then why the hell couldn't the so called 'experts' 'managing' PFC at all levels see it too?

How can a team with no senior players, no money, no ground and no hope be better than a premier league club that produces some of the best youth in football??? I think you are like the previous owners of your club! A dreamer!

Yes because the history books read that you have beaten us on more occasions than we have beaten you. I think they do not. The difference is skate we have facilities you boys can only dream of, 3 years ago we were down and out close to the same situation as yourselves but due to the facilities we got a fantastic owner who has made our club great again. You spent all the money you got from being in the prem and winning the fa cup on players your infrastrcucture simply could not afford and your fans are now paying for it hope the trip back from Plymouth wasn't too long for you. I certainly enjoyed the trip back from there last time we played down there

But you (the fans) are implicit in the running up of the debts. The fans wanted the silver ware and league title, so the club pushes beyond its means.... I just hope it was worth it.

You didn't speak out when it was obvious that you were spending more than you could possibly sustain. Ok, let's forgive that one. Oh, you immediately did it all over again. From what I've seen in the last few weeks I wouldn't be surprised if your wage bill last season wasn't bigger than ours and we went up and you down - not to mention we are twice the size of you.

Our investment in infrastructure and youth academy is what saved us when we were in Admin. It was a cheap buy for someone who wanted a long term project. You prefered to buy the FA cup rather than invest in your future. Now you pay the price, don't moan - you made your decisions, we made ours.

Altogether now: Imagine there's no Pompey It's easy if you try. No Fratton Park to play in The fans just let it die
easy words to remember, even you oddballs can manage it, altogether now.
We've seen you winding up the poor old skates on The News. We've got your number son, we've felt your collar. Now slip off down to The Argus and let them have a feel.

Perhaps he hoped that leaving it late would push the administrators into cutting him some slack, and giving him a better deal. They will get paid either way so probably don't care. Totally agreed, if the PST can't get agreement over the table soon regarding PFC, then it should be left to burn.

The pheonix club that they could build from all those donations would be much better respected in the football world than the mess that is there now.

Totally agreed, if the PST can't get agreement over the table soon regarding PFC, then it should be left to burn.

The pheonix club that they could build from all those donations would be much better respected in the football world than the mess that is there now.

Having said that, I would miss seeing that picture.
save it like i have and look and laugh at it from time to time.

it makes me chuckle when i feel down.....
Personally I'm gutted we didn't get Channers, followed by PST and then Liquidisation for the Grand Finale. But then I've always been greedy :)

"We are ready, we have a fully funded and costed bid," he said.

"Our bid is ready to roll and we are still looking for new pledges.
if the bid is fully funded.... why ask for more pledges?

... oh I know why.... pledges so far are nowhere near enough.

also, re your comment earlier - Saints have been there. WE have been through the pain. only difference is - we didn't buy the FA cup. We have a stadium thats capable of hosting Premier League matches. We never let stitched up and local charities or businesses.

you keep bumping your gums but, quite frankly, theres not much coming out of your fishy mouth.
Saints won't be going bankrupt anytime soon because we have owners who are realistic, a manager who is proving himself time and again and a team who don't need their nappy changing at half time.
