Hampshire's Neil Raymond and his Great Britain & Ireland teammates suffered a 17-9 defeat to the United States in the Walker Cup.

The Corhampton amateur ace won two out of a possible four points in the 44th edition of the famous contest, but that wasn't enough to stop the visiting squad being well beaten at the National Golf Links of America, in Southampton, New York.

Raymond, playing in the event for the first time, experienced mixed fortunes over the two days of competition.

Alongside Matt Fitzpatrick, the 27-year-old won his opening foursomes match, beating Jordan Niebrugge and Nathan Smith 1up on Saturday morning, as GB&I claimed a 2.5-1.5 lead after the first session.

However, the Americans dealt a devastating blow in the afternoon singles, winning six-and-a-half points out of a possible eight.

Raymond, who went out at the top of the order, took his match against Bobby Wyatt down the 18th, but lost 2up.

Trailing 8-4 at the halfway stage, GB&I needed a strong performance in this morning's foursomes to give themselves a chance.

Raymond and Fitzpatrick rekindled their partnership, beating Michael Weaver and Todd White 3&2, but the Americans were able to split the session 2-2.

That left GB&I facing a mountain to climb this afternoon, needing to win seven out of a possible ten points in the singles to retain the trophy, which they won at Royal Aberdeen in 2011.

Raymond, who will now turn professional, again went out first, but his fortunes against Wyatt did not improve, as he was beaten 4&3.

GB&I claimed just three points from the final session, as the United States triumphed 17-9.
