HAMPSHIRE put themselves in pole position to reach the Daily Telegraph South East Group League Final this season with a dramatic 7-5 win over Surrey at Basingstoke, on Sunday.
While most golf fans’ eyes were fixed firmly on the telly and events at Royal Lytham, the eight men representing Hampshire, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands had their focus fixed firmly on beating last year’s South Division champions, who beat them at Royal Wimbledon on the day Darren Clarke lifted the Claret Jug at Royal St George’s.
And Hampshire were in no mood to hang about and miss the climax to the 141st Open Championship in Lancashire, and got the upper hand by winning the morning foursomes 3-1.
