SAINTS remain in danger at the bottom of the Championship table after being held to a goalless draw by fellow relegation scrappers Coventry at St Mary's.

In a very nervy and scrappy game neither side was able to create more than an occasional chance and in the end the result was a fair reflection of the game.

But for both sides it kept them in the battle to survive, probably now right down to the very end of the season.

The blustery conditions made it tough going and the early stages of the game were scrappy.

Coventry were often looking to get the ball in early to Leon Best to either control and bring either Jay Tabb or Michael Mifsud into play or to try and get in behind himself from a long ball. Alternatively they were looking to loft the ball into the corners for Tabb and Mifsud to chase down.

Jason Euell had the first effort on goal on ten minutes when the ball ricocheted to him but from 20 yards out he drove wide of the target.

Stephen Hughes had a go for Coventry a minute later but could only hook over the bar after a cross had been half cleared.

Saints had appeals for a penalty waved away on 18 minutes.

Some neat interplay saw the ball lofted over the backline where Stern John closed in on goal but hit the deck as Kasper Schmeichel came out to try and claim the ball but the referee decided it was a fair challenge.

Schmeichel had to be quick off his line again a minute later, this time just managing to clear before Vincent Pericard could get to the ball.

John had half a chance on 24 minutes when he met Gregory Vignal's low fizzed free kick from deep but didn't connect cleanly.

There was a better opportunity for Pericard two minutes later when he was played in on the left side of the area but fired his half volleyed effort wide.

Youssef Safri tried his luck from 25 yards out on 35 minutes but it went well wide.

Coventry managed a shot on target three minutes later but it was a tame hit from Michael Doyle that was straight at Richard Wright.

Darren Powell was first to a corner five minutes before half time but could only direct his header over the bar from ten yards out.

Saints did have another chance before the break with the ball being cut back to John from Jhon Viafara on the right.

He span and hit it early on the half volley from the edge of the area but it was taken by Schmeichel diving to his right.

It was a comfortable save but it was the only stop of any note made by either keeper which explained why it remained goalless at half time.

Coventry made a tactical switch at the break pushing Mifsud up alongside Best in a 4-4-2 formation with Tabb on the left of midfield and Kevin Thornton on the right.

But it was Saints who created the first chance of the half and came the closest of either side to breaking the deadlock.

The ball was fed into Mario Licka inside the area with his back to goal but he turned well and fired a half volley that Schmeichel was at full stretch down to his left to stop and just managed to hold on to as Saints closed in.

Wright had to make his first save of note on 55 minutes when Mifsud cut in from the left and hit a near post shot from the edge of the area but the new Saints keeper got down at his near post to stop.

Hughes became the first player in the book three minutes later for a high challenge on Euell.

Viafara whipped in a great cross towards the far post on the hour mark but John's downward header was blocked at the by Schmeichel.

Best was the next in the book for a foul on Powell.

The game was starting to liven up and Schmeichel was again in action, this time saving down to his right from Pericard's low shot from 25 yards.

Coventry made their first switch on 65 minutes with Julian Gray coming on for Thornton. He went to the left with Tabb switching to the right.

Saints gave away a needless free kick in a central position 25 yards out on 68 minutes when Wayne Thomas clattered into the back of Best but Daniel Fox's effort curled round the wall but wide of the post.

Wright made a terrific save on 70 minutes to keep out Isaac Osbourne who stole the ball on the right, burst into the area and curled a shot with the outside of his right foot but the Saints keeper produced a strong one handed save to turn it away.

Saints made their first change a minute later with Bradley Wright-Phillips' exile ending as he replaced Pericard.

Fox hit an ambitious effort from 40 yards that Wright was happy to see over the bar.

Wright-Phillips had the ball in the net on 76 minutes but the flag had already gone up for offside.

Coventry made their second switch on 81 minutes with Mifsud coming off for Robbie Simpson.

John had a great chance to give Saints the lead a minute later when Safri chipped the ball into the box, Euell helped it in towards John whose sidefooted volley from eight yards out was straight at the advancing Schmeichel.

Saints escaped by the skin of their teeth on 87 minutes when the ball rolled across the six yard box but no Coventry player could turn it home while Gray's effort after he collected the ball was turned over by Wright.

As the game wore to a close there was a flare up which saw Elliott Ward booked after a challenge with his studs up.

The fourth official indicated three minutes of stoppage time but neither side could create another chance in that time and the match ended with a point apiece.

The bottom two are down, Barnsley will be the third team down.
Before all those clueless negative dimwit Saints supporters get on here and start doing what most Saints supporters do, MOAN, dont!
Look at the positives for once.
Oh and by the way this thing with Lowe, its complete and utter rubbish, he wont be coming back to SFC.
Theres a pattern with him using the media to create a negative cloud around SFC.
He wants SFC to go into administration, in order that he can pick the club up, for next to nothing.

Booing BWP was disgraceful, but what do you expect with all these negative Saints supporters.

Nice to have a real goalkeeper for the first time this season. Viafara and Euell worked hard but again gave the ball away too many times. Pericard looked ponderous, better when BWP came on. Not enough pace in attack and little width. We won't create chances unless we speed things up, the passing was slow and often went backwards. More players need to press on and get into the box instead of waiting and hoping something will happen.

It was a dreadful game. Saints have no confidence and no width. They never onvle looked like getting in behind the opposition defence. Pericard has brought nothing additional to the team it was a releif to see him substituted. Richard Wright had a good game in goal. The relegation issues will go down to the last game and we'll be biting our nails. Think I'll go and watch Aldershot who play entertaining football, not the rubbish I have to sit through today. The end of season fair is not for the fient hearted, or those who are not truely committed to Saints. It was never going to be pretty, and although a draw is disapointing it is better than defeat. We haven't got enough creative nouse to break defensive teams down at home, but if we can retain the battling spirit in away games and prove difficult to be beaten, unlike the debacle at Hull and Preston etc, then I am optimistic that we can cling on. Whoever the third related team is, I don't think that we can afford to gloat at their unfortunate expense. It is good to have a quality goalkeeper as a loanee, although Richard Wright is a bit on the small side, and oh don't we miss Andrew Davies? Keep the faith, and stay loyal. COYR

Went to the Saints game today and left after 80 minutes as it was like watching paint dry. Dont agree with pearson's team selection - Surman and Bradley on the bench (should have started instead of that skate Pericard and that Joke Jason Euell)

I am hoping we stay up, but we have a very tough run in but I think it will go to the last game. Colchester and Scunthorpe are doomed and It is impossible to predict the third team.

Up the saints, and I wish idiots would stop slagging the team off. We got to stick together.

We should have gambled in the 2nd half and taken off Licka and Viafara (what a cart horse) for Surman and Hammill. Our midfield simply ran out of ideas towards the end. Pericard has to be the worst player I've seen up front since Paul Moody.

The debacle @ Hull where clearly a more expierienced manager would have employed tactics to ensure we didnt loose the game. However that seems to be Pearsons tactics for home games!
For me yesterday was a clear case where width was required and clearly Hammil or Surman was called for but he ignored both and some members of the crowd.
Before all you spout off how good it is that he is here consider these thoughts: A Manager is there to make Big Decisions and do of his best to effect the results of games and I have seen plenty of passion fro Pearson but no tactical nouse and I am very concerned as to where we are going to end up?

we have to be realistic. we havent got the players who can knock the ball around and then play a perfect through ball. They can hardly string two passes together, because they havent got the ability and no one wants it. We are now keeping it tight, playing for a draw and trying to pinch a goal. This is the best pearson can do with the crap burley has left him. Although i would prefer hammill/surman to licka and viafara is seriously off form at the mo. Im glad BWP was booed throughout, hes lazy, has bad atitude and obviously thinks hes good but isnt. oh and hes highly overpaid!

How can we expect to pick up the vital points we need to stay up when we are too scared to go out and play attacking football to try and win games. We leave two of our best attacking players, BWP and Surman, on the bench and then play Pericard and Euell instead. We need to start going into games looking for wins or we will never pick up the points we need to stay up.

A draw was no real help for anyone yesterday. I thought Richard Wright played well (his kicking was a bit wayward, but I guess he hasn't played in a while and needs to get the radar tuned in.)

It was another uninspired performance though. No-one seems to know how to unlock the defence, we have no width (can we please just play Hammill, he is the only one capable of going past a player).

I thought the atmosphere was good, but being sat in the heart of the Northam it is hard to judge.

I absolutely agree - innocent until proven guilty. However, someone who has been caught on CCTV, and fined by the manager should have been out of the door by now. He may not yet have been convicted by a court, but if you or I had done the same we'd be collecting our cards.

And yesterday, frankly, the team went two steps backwards after taking a short step forward. There was not a single player on the pitch who looked like they actually wanted to win. Stern John who at least looked a little interested in recent weeks, was just ambling (shambling) around all afternoon- and he was by no means the worst.

I just think that the example shown by the club in lack of discipline easily filters through the whole team.

Some people on this and other message boards refer to what a great club Saints were once. Saints have never been great club in the 50 years I've been watching them. But they have often been a club with great integrity and principles. I just think on the day the statue of Ted Bates was unveiled he would have been turning in his grave when BWP was allowed on that pitch. Which is when I boo'd and walked out.

I will renew my season ticket - league 1 (the old third division) is not new to me as a Saints fan - but I will continue to protest about BWP (as I would even if he were a half decent player, which he isn't).

In the meantime let's hope for a miracle, because I can't see where we are going to get more than 48 or 49 points.

Still, the next game has got to be warmer at least, so things could be looking up.

Oh, and as a final point re Rupert Lowe - hm, let me think, who benefited from leaking the story about Rupert Lowe putting a bid together? Oh yes, Leon Crouch. The same person without the bottle to sack BWP.

Cmon you Sainty boys.

Sharpee. League 2 and Conference football is honest and is often far more entertaining thanthe rubbish currently on show at SMS. The players are not on inflated wages and always give 100%. Aldershot's ground ramshackle? Rather a snobby statement, don't you think? I might add that a pie and cup of tea is far cheaper, and you don't have to queue for ages like you do at SMS.

From all accounts Jason Euell was at worst one of the better players(if not the best) on the Saints team yesterday. Why is it that some fans cannot give him some credit when its due?

The important thing from all accounts is that Nigel Pearson is getting the best out of the players and we can't ask for more than this.

Whether the best is good enough for Saints to survive relegation remains to be seen. Signing Richard Wright for a month was an excellent initiative on Nigel's part and hopefully the BOD can allow him to bring in someone who can motivate the team on the field.....someone like Chris Marsden once was. Someone perhaps who is being wasted on the bench, like Richard Wright was who would relish the challenge of using his talents, to keep the Saints in the Championship.

I believe the Club has until Thursday to bring in a new loanee.Every effort should be made to bring in an experienced player who is also a leader. Coventry are planning on doing this according to Coleman and hopefully Saints will do the same.

The cost relative to the benefits of taking this initiative is small as the consequences of relegation, means administration, something that the Club and fans can do without.

It was a boring game against coventry but we must take are chances. Wright in goal had a gd game and i must admitt euell play quite well set up a couple of chances. Pericard better than saga never offside i think :S and more pace and power. Davies will be missed now and with useless powell at the back i am going to be very nervous towards the end of the season. It just makes us look bad to the away fans. Also people shouting out pointless comments like 'hack 'em' and 'get the ball' one they cant hear you two what the hell do you think the players are trying to do! Having said that i was impressed by the way itchem northam and kingsland silenced out coventry fans when they started cheering. I think the team played well: bit boring football but better to draw than to lose. The sections of fans that booed bradley wright phillips should never see a football match again. He made such a difference when he came on, his pace is what we need: BOOING PLAYERS DOES NOT HELP! Apart from that good attendance and a good scrappy draw
