Batsmen hold key to Hants success, says Katich
SIMON KATICH
SIMON KATICH

Simon Katich believes Hampshire's batsmen are the key to the county's chances this season.

Hampshire's top order failed to fire last term but Katich believes they can score the runs to keep the county in the first division.

The former Hampshire batsman said: "John Crawley's experience is crucial to Hampshire's chances and Nic Pothas is one of the most dangerous batsmen in county cricket at six or seven.

"Warnie thinks Michael Carberry is outstanding and Jimmy Adams and Chris Benham have a lot of ability but need to be more consistent."

Katich concedes that Hampshire will find it harder than ever to win the title this year.

He said: "It's getting harder to win the county championship each year.

"The first division is much stronger than the second division, there's a big difference as I found out from my time at Derbyshire.

"It won't be easy for Hampshire without the experience of Shaun Udal, Warnie's involvement only being on and off and Dimi also missing a couple of weeks because of the IPL.

"That's all going to test the depth of squad but it gives younger players the opportunity to step up."
