THE country’s best divers will look to secure their place at the London Olympics during trials at the British Gas Diving Championships starting today.

Medal hopefuls Tom Daley, Peter Waterfield, Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow will be at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

The squad have been training at Southend’s Garon Park over the past 18 months, and go into this weekend’s event knowing this is the last hurdle to a dream spot at the home Games.

Those who win their events and claim an Olympic qualifying score in Sheffield will secure their 2012 spot. And those finish runners-up with the score will be considered for selection by GB diving performance director Alexei Evangulov.

Southend diving coach Bill Clark, who will be a judge at this weekend’s event, said: “For the first time ever, Britain has qualified for places on all the diving events at the Olympics.

“The divers know what they have to do and it might be the case that we get a few youngsters who make the grade, and Alexei chooses to send them for the experience.

“And it’s going to be a sell-out this weekend so this is the time for everyone to shine.”
