England lost three early wickets as Pakistan made a fine start to the first NatWest Test at Lord’s.

Out-of-form opener Mark Stoneman, skipper Joe Root and Dawid Malan all departed for single-figure scores inside the opening 70 minutes of play.

Opener Alastair Cook also narrowly survived an appeal for lbw on umpire’s call as the hosts struggled after electing to bat first.

Stoneman, who averaged just 16.42 during his first four matches of the County Championship campaign, was bowled by Mohammad Abbas for four with the last ball of the morning’s fourth over.

Root, batting at three and having survived a run-out attempt before he had faced a ball, tried to drive Hasan in the 14th over but got a nick behind to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed to also depart for four.

Malan had made six before he also nicked Hasan behind in the 16th over to leave England 43 for three.
