England removed Virat Kohli as the highlight of a profitable final session that saw India reduced to 69 for six in the stop-start second day of a rain-ravaged second Specsavers Test.

Resuming on 15 for three at 5.10pm once a mid-afternoon storm at Lord’s had passed, the tourists were able to add 24 runs at the 20-over mark with Kohli compiling 19.

But in the next five overs Chris Woakes initiated a flurry of wickets when he had Kohli caught by Jos Buttler before the same duo accounted for Hardik Pandya. Sam Curran then bowled Dinesh Karthik.

Before the rain arrived, India were in full retreat in the face of two wickets from Jimmy Anderson and then a run-out as India got into another pickle off his bowling.

Only 8.3 overs were possible before tea time, but by then England’s all-time leading wicket-taker needed only another four to become the first bowler in history to reach 100 at the Home of Cricket.

With the fifth delivery of the match, Anderson made short work of a scoreless Murali Vijay before KL Rahul edged behind.

Adding to India’s woes was Cheteshwar Pujara being run out after pushing for a single to point and then ending up stranded almost at the same end as Kohli when his captain suddenly decided to retreat.
