And they do just that. They save their toughest dive until last - a 3.8 difficulty forward 4.5 somersault. It's a fine effort too and will score them 87.78 points. That might be good enough for them to hold onto fifth. The pair hug each other as they get out of the pool. The crowd boo, as they wanted more points, but Mears and Robinson-Baker will be satisfied with that performance.

And that's probably it for Mears and Robinson-Baker's outside medal hopes ahead of their last dive, as the Russians and Americans turn in superb final efforts. But let's see if they can finish well.

So, after a few slip-ups elsewhere, Mears and Robinson-Baker have climbed the standings a bit and are up to fifth place. They're about 15 points short of the medals, but this is a good performance from the duo. China are way out in front, but USA, Russia and Ukraine are in a real scrap for silver and bronze.

Round five, and Mears and Robinson-Baker produce their best dive of the competition so far. An inward 3.5 somersault with tuck, which is executed superbly, nets them 84.66 points.

The British pair remain seventh after round four, some 13 points off the medal positions. Too much to overcome, you would imagine.

Mears and Robinson-Baker come out for round four armed with a 3.4 difficulty dive - the forward 2.5 somersault and 2 twists. I'm sure you've all tried it. It's not bad again. A score of 78.54 keeps their consistent performance going, but they're not quite at the level needed to challenge for the medals.

That's round 3 done, and the British duo are down in seventh place with three dives to go. China lead ahead of Mexico and Russia.

Mears and Robinson-Baker up the difficulty to 3.3 with their third dive, a reverse 2.5 somersault with 1.5 twists. A big cheer from the crowd, and that's ok. A score of 77.22 from the judges. They'll be a bit outside the medals at the halfway stage, though.

Mears and Robinson-Baker tied for sixth at the end of round two, but just 1.2 points off second place. Leaders China are 4.2 points clear of them. Now the required stuff is out of the way, we're getting into the spectacular big dives.

Good news in the sailing. Stevie Morrison and Southampton-born Ben Rhodes moved to overall fifth in the 49er standings after a good day on the water.

The duo posted a fourth and second in Portland Harbour, although Australia's Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen continued to lead the way after a second and a first today.

Their reverse dive with pike nets them another score of 52.20. A solid opening two rounds for the pair, as they get ready to increase their degree of difficulty.

That's round one of the diving over. Britain are sixth at the moment, with hot favourites China leading, although not much separating the divers right now. Another round of 2.0 difficulty dives coming up...

While we're waiting for the first round of diving to finish, Bradley Wiggins is heading off in the cycling time trial. And Wiggo fever is in full flow at Echo Towers this afternoon...two of the female staff are even sporting their own cut-out sideburns to show their support. The Olympics does strange things to people.

Nice start for the duo. They open up with a back dive with pike, and there's not much wrong with it, as they score 52.20. That's the first of two required dives, before we get into the more difficult optional ones.

An update on Southampton's hockey star Alex Danson, who was stretchered off in Team GB's 5-3 win over South Korea last night...British coach Danny Kerry says that the injury is "not thought to be serious". The women are back in action tomorrow in the group stage against Belgium.

The British crew look a bit disappointed with that. They really gave the Germans a good run for the first 1,500m, but their early efforts clearly hurt them in the last 500m. In the end, they were hanging on for bronze.

500m to go. It's practically neck and neck. The Germans have regained a lead of 0.2 seconds, though.

And Britain are taking the Germans on! They've nudged ahead. Can they do it? Can they?

At the halfway mark, Britain are just 0.4 seconds behind Germany. Right now it's those two who hold a decent lead over the rest of the field.

It's a strong start by Great Britain, who are a fraction of a second behind leaders Germany after the first 500m.

Wilson and Co cross the line in sixth, well back of the competition. That was always likely to be the case, after only just sneaking through their repechage into the final. Ukraine take gold, with Germany second and United States third.

We've also got our sailors in action along the coast in Weymouth. Southampton's Ben Rhodes (49er) and former Solent University students Paul Goodison (Laser) and Kate Macgregor (Match Racing) will be continuing their campaigns out on the water this afternoon.

As well as the rowing, we have plenty of other Hampshire interest today. Southampton Diving Academy's Chris Mears is competing in the 3m springboard synchro final at 3pm, alongside Nick Robinson-Baker.

Winchester's Rob Moore is back in hockey action this afternoon, as the men's team look to build on their opening 4-1 win over Argentina when they take on South Africa in their latest group match at 4pm.

Saints midfielder Jack Cork is in Cardiff for tonight's Team GB football match against Uruguay, while Hart's Andrew Willis will be looking for a podium finish in the 200m breaststroke final at 7.30pm.

Then, at 12.30pm, it's the turn of one of Hampshire's top medal hopes, as Southampton's James Foad races in the men's eight final. Team GB will face some stiff competition, notably from the dominant German crew, but are among the favourites. Also in the men's eight boat with Foad is another Hampshire Olympian - Alton's Alex Partridge.
