ALEX DANSON emphatically buried any personal fitness doubts as GB hockey’s unbeaten start continued yesterday – then warned her side they need to find an extra gear this weekend.

Danson entered the clash with Belgium yesterday with a fitness cloud over her head having been taken off on a stretcher in Tuesday’s 5-3 win over South Korea.

However with some intensive rehab on an injured ankle the GB ace was back on the field just 48 hours later to help her side to a third consecutive win at the Games.

But while quick to praise the work behind the scenes in getting her back on the field so rapidly Danson was also just as rapid to warn her teammates against getting ahead of themselves.

Next up in their qualification tilt is a clash with China on Saturday and Danson admitted the challenge of the side from the Far East should not be taken lightly.

“We have an amazing medical team so I felt good out there,” she said. “I spent pretty much all day yesterday in physio.

“To be back playing against Belgium it felt good. It wasn’t our best performance but we won 3-0, and if we can win 3-0 without playing our best then we’re pretty happy with that.

“Most important now is the recovery for Saturday’s game against China, we do a lot of running in our game. We’re very fit, we pride ourselves on our fitness, but now it’s about looking at China and getting our squad and our tactics spot on.

“It’s about matching them tactically, I think we can out-run any team and technically we’ve made such big strides that we can outplay most teams. We need to take our opportunities when we can on Saturday.”

Despite her heroics in getting back onto the field Danson was not able to get herself on the scoresheet on Thursday.

However with three different scorers finding the back of the net against Belgium, GB now have had seven goalscorers from their opening three games.

And Danson believes that is a vital weapon as they prepare for an assault on the medals.

“We’ve worked so hard over the last three years and it’s amazing that it’s paying off,” she added. “I think having so many people on our team having scored shows that everyone wants to get on the scoresheet which is absolutely fantastic. It’s testament to the hard work that’s been done.”
