A cattery in South Godstone is struggling to find homes for several black cats in its care and staff believe it is because of the colour of their fur.

Staff at South Godstone Animal Centre are currently caring for nearly 60 cats, six of which are black, including one of the centre's longest-staying residents, Pee-Wee, a friendly-natured cat who was handed over as an unwanted pet in November.

Centre Manager Miranda Luck said: "Black or black and white cats get overlooked as they don't tend to stand out from the crowd. "It is true that many people prefer more unusual colours to plain black and often ignore temperament and personalities, which many black cats have in abundance to make up for their lack of dramatic colour. They say that black cats are lucky, but it's often not the case when finding them good homes."
