A Croydon ladies bowls team has just returned from Belfast, where representing England they added the British Championship to their national title.

Carol Templeman, Linda Stanley, Jean Hunter and Rosemarie Hilton from Croydon indoor bowls club won the right to represent England in the British Isles Championship, by winning the national title in Basingstoke last month.

On Monday, they secured the British title by beating the Channel Isles (Jersey) in the final.

After a good start gave England a 14-5 lead, the Channel Islands came back to 14-all.

But Croydon bounced back with two doubles to lead 21-14.

After another Jersey come back, Croydon held on in a nail-biting finish to win 21-20 and take the title by one shot.

Carol Templeman said: "I cannot believe it.

"We seem to specialise in close finishes. We play as a team, each taking our turn to play outstanding bowls."

Croydon (England) saw off Wales, hosts Northern Ireland and the Channel Isles on their way to victory.
