MILLBROOK RFC progressed into the next round of the RFU Junior Vase with a comprehensive 48-10 victory over Sussex-based Hellingly.

The visitors were an unknown side but Brook controlled the early phases with Rich Colmer scoring an early try before setting up Mike Randell to sprint in for the second, writes Clive Downton.

Millbrook’s front row did well to keep the visitors at bay in the following exchanges and man-of-the-match Luke Wilson dominated the lineout and added the third try before Mark Colmer touched down.

Rich Colmer’s three conversions put Brook 26-3 up at the break and it was more of the same from the home side in the second half.

Rich Colmer crossed the line again with a good individual break before bringing up his hat-trick and Randell got a second while Hellingly were rewarded with a penalty try for their efforts.

After two disappointing last two league games, Fordingbridge bounced back with a convincing 41-12 win against Crawley RFC in the same competition.

Mark Hammond began an impressive afternoon’s kicking by opening the scoring with a well-taken penalty.

Soon after, man-of-the-match David Stone intercepted a loose pass on the Crawley 22 to run in unopposed under the posts.

Crawley responded almost immediately with a forward-dominated try to keep the game even.

Two Mat Maynard tries took Fordingbridge into the break 20-7 up.

Mark Hammond scored and added the extras ten minutes into the second half. Battling Crawley hit back but were finished off with two tries in the last quarter – one from Jake Kostelyk and the second from first XV debutant Stuart Walker who scored a brilliant individual try in the corner.

Saving his best kick of the afternoon Hammond converted from the touch against a very strong breeze.

The successful cup sides face each other next Saturday as Fordingbridge travel to Millbrook in Snows Group Hampshire One.

Ellingham & Ringwood’s bid to progress in the Vase ended in a tight defeat at home to Surrey side Chipstead.

The sides were level at 8-8 at half-time with try from Chris Frost and a Josh Butcher penalty.

The Es failed to take advantage of the wind after the break but gave away countless penalties and ended up losing 18-15 – Frost getting a great individual try while the visitors were down to 13.

l London One South side Gosport & Fareham beat bottom-placed Twickenham 29-7 with tries from wingers Rory Penfold and David Cleary, skipper Tim Snowden and Jack Brawn. Alex Duncombe kicked nine points.
