Newly-promoted Romsey and Eastleigh got a taste of how tough Hampshire 1 will be as they both lost out.
Romsey came unstuck 41-20 at New Milton – despite taking the game to the home side early on.
The large New Milton crowd had little to cheer for the first 15 minutes as Romsey threw everything they had at Milton, using their size advantage to good effect.
The Milton defence weathered the storm and the game was brought to life when Chris Connacher ran 80 metres only to be denied a try by a superb last minute tackle by the Romsey full back.
After 20 minutes seasoned hooker Andy George took to the field as a replacement and the game changed in Milton’s favour.
