Eastleigh at last put a smile back onto the face of Coach Phil Thompson after a well deserved 10-0 victory at Alton.
Sound tackling and adaption to the conditions underfoot stopped the hosts’ early pressure – allowing Eastleigh to play the game tight.
With Pete Noonan back running things at fly half it was not long before pressure saw Paul Taylor forcing his way over for the only try of the game, Tim Liston converted.
Debutant George Weatherill broke up further Alton attacks with some big tackles along with his back row partner Paul Taylor to end the first half with a seven-point lead.
In the second period centre Dave Craddock and Wayne Rawlins repelled wave after wave off attacks that saw the home team become frustrated at not being able to turn position into points. Tim Liston was allowed the chance of penalty after the hosts killed the ball in the ruck to which he duly accepted. A late well placed kick ahead near the end gave Alton the chance to score but an ever alert Jon Lynch sprinted back to touch down to end the danger.
