Last-gasp setback

11:42am Saturday 27th June 2009

Southampton Spitfires failed to capitalise on a great start and suffered an agonising last-minute defeat at Co-operative Conference South leaders Greenwich Admirals.

Early tries from Tommy Gray (2), James Monk and Kevin Cant helped the visitors lead 22-0 – Aaron Nelson kicking three conversions – but Greenwich scored a last minute penalty to triumph 36-34.

Spitfires were 22-8 ahead at the interval, but losing forwards James Canneaux and Andy Dymott to injury didn’t help and Greenwich stormed back to lead 30-22.

A patched-up Cannueux reduced the arears with a try and Nelson added the extras to make it 30-28.

Greenwich went into a 34-28 lead but Cant’s try and Nelson’s conversion made it 34-34 with six minutes remaining.

But the Spitfires lost to a penalty awarded for a ball steal in the tackle.
