Winchester’s season opened and closed with disappointing defeats at the hands of Camberley, Saturday’s 36-22 result mirroring the setback the City club suffered in Surrey last September.
In the season’s opener Winchester excelled in the first half and led with 20 minutes remaining while on Saturday they produced a stunning second half revival and trailed by just two points with ten minutes left on the clock.
Camberley scored a try and a goal within the opening 20 minutes and Winchester remained under the cosh for most of the first half, a short respite coming when fly-half Jack Parsons converted Matt Burt’s try on the half-hour.
Camberley added an unconverted push-over try on the stroke of half-time, scoring again within two minutes of the resumption.
Then, a monumental drive enabled prop Danny Waite, pictured left, to ground in the corner and Winchester were back in contention.
A fine solo try from Jack Parsons and a touchline sprint from halfway to the tryline gave No. 8 Jake McGregor his eighth try of the season and put Winchester just two points in arrears as the game edged into the closing ten minutes.
Despite Winchester’s desperate attempts to upturn the scoreline Camberley resisted and responded with a match winning try and goal in stoppage time.
