Woodward rules out RFU return

Sir Clive Woodward Sir Clive Woodward

FORMER Saints director of football Sir Clive Woodward has appeared to rule himself out of a return to Twickenham as the Rugby Football Union's performance director.

Woodward, England's 2003 World Cup-winning supremo, had been installed as favourite for a post created by RFU chief executive John Steele's recent restructuring plan.

But Woodward, the British Olympic Association's director of sport and Team GB deputy chef de mission, has now distanced himself from the role in his first public comment on the speculation that has raged for weeks.

In a statement released by the BOA, Woodward revealed he had participated in "informal conversations" with RFU "senior figures" with the full knowledge of BOA chairman Lord Colin Moynihan and chief executive Andy Hunt.

But he also confirmed he would not be attending interviews relating to the performance's director position.

Woodward said: "Since the Rugby Football Union announced its restructuring plan late last year, there has been considerable speculation that I might return to the RFU.

"With the full knowledge of Colin Moynihan and Andy Hunt, I have had informal conversations regarding the role of performance director with senior figures at the RFU.

"However, I have not participated in a formal interview for this position at any stage in the RFU process.

"From the outset I made it clear to both Colin and Andy that I would only attend a formal interview with their full knowledge. I would like to express my thanks for their understanding over this situation, and also for their considered views which have been greatly appreciated.

"In order to prevent any further speculation, and in the interests of the both the BOA and RFU, I would like to formally confirm that I will not be attending any interviews for this position."

Woodward was totally out of his depth when dealing with true professionals- as opposed to the public school types who are at best paid amateurs in Rugby Union.

Usually I agree with you but to say at the best paid amateurs is totally wrong they train harder than any footballer & they don't act like spoilt brats like certain footballers.Wooward had A good team with a brilliant Leader in Martin Johnson & i feel no matter who the manager was they would have one but when Woodward went on to say his love was football & he didn't like Rugby I prayed he would fail & in the sport he was so in love with he was a joke but then through his success with Rugby he got the job with the BOA.I'm happy he's not going to go back to Rugby & not all Rugby players or supporters went to public school I went to Bellemoor which was a Secondary modern ( comprehensive) school & I played with guys who went to Millbrook & I played until I was 51 so please don't give that crap idea of rugby players maybe if you had someone like Martin Johnson & players who would put all on the line like terry butcher you might have done better in the world cup but you had Roonie swearing at the fans & players not even trying. These are your idea of true professionals? like the players who instead of fighting to stay up were busy looking for other clubs,I never thought I'd hear you sounding exactly like Southy but on this you do

You must have to agree that the RFU is run very badly, as if the sport was still amateur. The reason why footballs behave they do is because the stakes are so much higher- a top footballer earns more in a month than a comparative rugby player will earn in a year so they will behave differently. Rooney is a pro because he plays football for money. Prior to 1995 Rugby players were only paid on the side.

If you look at the innovations in Rugby League it leaves Union miles behind.

Just because it's run by old duffers doesn't mean it's played by amateurs but I take your point as for Rugby League I personally can't stand the game & if you have watched England internationals they are trying to change & become a delight to witchery watching the World Cup

Condorman I'm a Level one Rugby union coach, what I tried to say was watch the rugby world cup.I can promise you this if England lose it won't be for not trying.I watch the England Football team in the world cup & if that's the commitment from real professionals I wish that Rugby could go back to being Amateurs I thought they were a disgrace 7 Roonies vile retort to the England fans showed exactly what these prima donnas think of the supporters. Now on other posts I have taken abuse & been attacked from the Left Wing but on this one I hope not from you.I've watched Brazil in the past & they were great but the current crop of international teams are pale comparison to teams of that era & many football fans have started watching Rugby & love it.When the RWC come to England & there's a game at st.Marys if I'm still alive why not team up & go & watch a game together?

I hope you're still around in 2015, although I'm not happy that Lowe got the games during the actual football season. on the radio the other week it was intimated that both codes of rugby (as well as cricket) are being propped up by Sky money. Neither could sustain themselves without the money Sky gave them. If the football money dried up players would have to go abroad as they used to pre 1992
