The race is on to join Hampshire sailor Ian Walker on the Volvo Ocean Race podium.

The Warsash sailor became the first British skipper to ever win the round-the-world race after coming third in the penultimate stage from Lisbon to Lorient with his Abu Dhabi Race Team.

Now, on the 960-nautical mile final stage from Lorient to Gothenburg in Sweden, which includes a pit-stop at The Hague in Netherlands, it is up to a quartet of challengers to secure second and third.

Bar a catastrophic breach of rules, Walker will claim the top prize, while Team Brunel, Dongfeng Race Team, MAPFRE – which has Hamble’s Rob Greenhalgh onboard – and Team Alvimedica will battle it out for the remaining podium places.

They are separated by just six points, with Brunel on top of the pack as it stands. Meanwhile leg eight winners, Team SCA – skippered by Hampshire’s Sam Davies and navigated by Rob’s sister Libby Greenhalgh, will be looking to upset the chasing pack.
