Leigh McMillan’s hopes of challenging for the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series title took a blow at the weekend.
The Hampshire sailor’s crew on The Wave Muscat were just one point behind overall leaders, Swiss team Alinghi, going into the penultimate stage of the tour in Nice, France.
But racing on the third of the four-day event blew the leaderboard wide open as Alinghi took 54 of the 70 points on offer while The Wave Muscat managed just 21. Although they staged a fightback on the final day yesterday, McMillan (pictured) and his team were left in ninth position overall, gaining two points while Alinghi took the maximum ten points for topping the leaderboard.
It means the Swiss have a massive nine-point advantage going into the final round in Sydney in December.
