IAN Williams is in pole position to create sailing history.
The Lymington-based yachtsman is currently leading the 2014 Alpari World Match Racing Tour by six points with two races left aboard GAC Pindar.
He is aiming to become the first man to win the event five times. Having won in 2007, 2008 and 2011, Williams pulled level with Australian Peter Gilmour by winning again in 2012. The match racing discipline pits two teams against each other in a tactical battle around a short inshore course.
Williams needs a good performance in the penultimate event in Bermuda next week.
US Virgin Islands sailor Taylor Canfield will draw level with him at the top of the rankings if he wins the event and Williams fails to reach the final.
Canfield has won the last two events, the Chicago Match Cup and the inaugural Dutch Match Cup.
If he can continue his winning streak at the Argo Group Gold Cup, he will be able to discard one of his third place finishes and draw level with Williams going into the season finale Monsoon Cup in Malaysia.
