SOUTHAMPTON sailor Ian Walker (pictured) remains in a good position in his challenge to become the first British sailor to skipper a yacht to Volvo Round the World Race victory.

His Azzam Abu Dhabi team last night moved into fourth place in the second leg, just 12.8 miles behind leaders Team Brunel with more than 4,130 miles to go until the finish line.

They had closed the gap from 19.3 miles earlier in the day, making faster progress with an average speed of 12.1 knots, compared with the 9.9 knots of Team Brunel and more than two knots quicker than third-placed MAPFRE.

Dongfeng Race Team was in second place, making 9.8 knots, and 6.9 miles behind the leader.

The race is expected to reach the second leg finish line in Abu Dhabi around December 13.
