PSP Southampton Boat Show
AFTER months of preparation the biggest boat show in the south finally opens today.
Paralympic sailing hero Helena Lucas will be cutting the ribbon for the PSP Southampton Boat Show at 11am.
She will be joined by Mark Cavell and Ian walker who claimed silver in sailing at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
Celebrity spotters can also catch a glimpse of Formula One racer Jenson Button and TV pundit Eddie Jordan at the launch of Sunseeker’s new boat at 11.30am.
Cycling ace Dani King will also be making an appearance at the show, which runs until Monday September 23.
Two Royal Marines will also be trying to set the world record for the longest underwater swim today.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to be turning up to see the rows of glamourous and luxurious boats and getting wise to everything maritime.
Organisers hope the show will bring in surplus cash into the city while 120,000 people flock to the marina to see more than 1,000 boats moored at the pontoons.

Like you say Echo, at bloody last, I've got my new superboat to pickup I'm looking forward to taking out for a spin, while I laugh at the poor people on the shore drooling.
Or is it just easier to make it a poor vs rich thing? I've been twice, there are manufactures there whose very aim is to make sailing affordable. Not to mention the trade it brings in.
But by all means, don't fire any neurons brain side before you post anything.

The entrance fees are too high for a family, that's the problem and one of the reasons people talk about it being "for the rich".

Prestigious in the boating/yachting world it may be, but lets stop kidding ourselves. Most of those showing do not have a base in Southampton, so it is not bringing masses of money here in boat yard or manufacturing/retail orders. Visitors, too, who must be well off to afford the entrance fees, just go to the show and then back home. They don't spend much in the city. Most don't go much further than Town Quay. They don't need to.
All the Boat Show does is clog up and close already overloaded roads and routes into Southampton, and make some money for the hotels, cafes, pubs, and show organisers. And some of mine is spent in policing costs for same.
Yes, I am an old misery but I am fed up with the rubbish that is spouted about the profits that the Boat Show brings to Southampton. It doesn't.

Same as every other year - visitors trying to look like they are yotties, and sales reps for every product that is vaguely related to sailing.
It costs a fortune in policing, traffic disruption and planning, and we never really know if the income was worth the public cost.”
