Firefighters to battle it out on the water

THEY are more used to battling against fires than fighting against one another, but that is exactly what will happen when dozens of teams of firefighters go head to head at the UK Firefighters Sailing Challenge.

Based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, the event will see more than 23 teams competing in the Solent over three days for the top spot.

The Challenge is open to 37-foot one-design yachts crewed by public sector Fire and Rescue Service personnel from all over the UK, including teams from Jersey and Guernsey.

For the first time in the event's five-year history, the country's police and ambulance services have also been invited to take part.

Round the world sailors Dame Ellen MacArthur, pictured, and Mike Golding have backed the event.

The event takes place from 29 April to May 1.
