Yacht was rescued twice in two days in the Solent
A YACHT had to rescued twice in two days after it was beset by propeller problems, engine failure and snow storms.
The 21ft Humbug first got a rope caught up in its propeller and following a mobile phone distress call from the middle of the Solent had to be towed into a marina near Gosport for repairs on Saturday.
Yesterday the vessel resumed its journey to Southampton from Brighton but again had to be rescued when its main and auxiliary engines failed in a snow blizzard
Chris Rudd, of the Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service, an independent lifeboat station, said: "I think they just had a bit of bad luck.
"They were pleased to see us again. It was still snowing and the visibility wasn't much more than 50 metres. They weren't the only ones out there."
Senior coxswain Mr Rudd said the yacht, crewed by two men in their 30s who were unhurt, had no radio - a recommended safety precaution.
Meanwhile the Sandown and Shanklin Inshore Lifeboat was called out yesterday afternoon to a 17ft fishing boat called Trei bien in distress east of Culver Cliff with two adults and two children on board. The vessel had complete engine failure and was towed to Bembridge.

It should be made compulsory for all boats/yachts etc to have an insurance based breakdown policy to cover for their recovery. Shopuld not be left to the taxpayers and public donations to fund the rescue of accidents or poorly maintained vessels.

Like other free services, it is abused. They should all pay the full cost of being rescued, and if necessary they should insure for it.

Whoa, hang on people. Get the facts right. I was on that boat, we had two radios and two motors. Agreed we ballsed up and got a rope tangled on the prop, but we were happily sailing, a large yacht offered us a tow which we accepted then THEY radioed the coastguard to take over. Our outboard was running at the time!
On Sunday we had a sudden engine stoppage, the outboard got a major dunking and there was almost no visibilty, and a force seven blizzard was not forecast. I would challenge anyone to have done anything different. Easy to criticise from the comfort of your armchair. We did not abuse the service, and had we been away from shipping would have just ridden it out.
Happy sailing people.

Hi Billy.
And the third it happened (13th April)? Twice was unlucky. Third time starts to indicate some serious problem. I'm not an armchair sailor. I have been traipsing up and down the Channel for 40 years or so. Never once had to call anyone out, though.
