Having been behind twice, Saints managed to salvage a point.
Isaac Hayden gave the Magpies the lead on 20 minutes with a low drive, before Manolo Gabbiadini levelled the scores on 49 minutes with a wonderful solo goal.
Newcastle were back ahead just two minutes later when Ayoze Perez finished at the near post after Fraser Forster spilt his initial shot.
Then, on 76 minutes, Shane Long was brought down in the box by Florain Lejeune and a penalty was given.
Gabbiadini stepped up to dispatch the spot kick in clinical fashion, netting his second of the day and third of the season.
