Mauricio Pellegrino insisted he didn’t do anything special to mastermind Saints’ four goal romp against Everton, and instead simply kept faith with his methods.

Saints went into yesterday’s match against Everton having scored just six times in their previous 13 home games.

But they completely defied those stats with Charlie Austin scoring twice while Dusan Tadic and Steven Davis also got on the scoresheet.

“It’s something that happens in football,” said Pellegrino.

“I didn’t do any special things, just keep believing, keeping going and we created a lot of chances like a lot of games at home when I think we deserved a lot of points.

“But sometimes is like this, you can score four goals like today, and sometimes like against Huddersfield not, but this is part of football.”

It was a big performance from Saints after a horrible defeat at Liverpool and Pellegrino added: “Football is everything – is character and trying to play well, good ideas with spirit and attacking performance, and for me the best thing after the equaliser in the first half, we continued in the same way with patience.

“We spoke about needing not to rush, don’t follow the anxiety of the crowd because sometimes instead of help us it is against, but I’m really happy with this.

“Also for some players who came from the bench and it’s not easy at this level, like Charlie and Pierre in this case.

“I am really happy because my players have been working really hard this week, we deserved to win and that’s the most important thing.”

As well as a recall for Charlie Austin, there was also a first Premier League start under Pellegrino’s management for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who impressed in midfield.

“I felt before that they are ready to play,” admitted Pellegrino.

“I said before the game that right now most are ready to play which is good news for us as we have difficult fixtures over next months and we’ll need all of them.

“In my squad now most are training really well. When you came from the bench like Prowsey, Pierre or Charlie and play in this way it’s not easy.”

He continued: “The most important thing the first half we played well but after the equaliser, the team was patient, and continued playing in the same way.

“I think after scoring the third one it was easy for us with the space from Shane and we create a lot of chances.

“Always from beginning I felt people got behind us and I have to be really pleased with our fans. Southampton was born from a difficult moment not too many years ago.

“The people know and the people are supporting our team and this victory is also for them.”
