Mauricio Pellegrino is hoping there isn’t serious damage to his squad after the unluckiest day he has seen in his managerial career.

Saints were engaging in their usual light training session at Staplewood on Friday before they travelled to West Brom for their FA Cup tie.

But the usually serene session had a nasty twist as Saints lost a remarkable three players to injury.

Steven Davis, Sofiane Boufal and Maya Yoshida all joined Shane Long and Charlie Austin on the sidelines.

Saints are optimistic that the injury to Bofual is not serious while Yoshida requires a scan after twisting his knee in a challenge with Guido Carrillo, but is thought unlikely to be sidelined for long.

Davis could be out for longer but Saints are waiting to find out.

Pellegrino said: “It was an unlucky day before travelling with Maya, Davo, Sofiane, then Shane plus Charlie.

“I have never ever seen something like that in one day with three players.

“It’s part of our job and now we have to wait until next week for what the doctor says.

“Maybe a couple of players will come back I imagine but the other maybe a little bit longer.”

It didn’t prevent Saints from making it through to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win.

Two wins in as many weeks away at West Brom also boosted the confidence of the side ahead of a crucial run of matches where Saints take on many of the teams around them, mostly away from home, in the coming weeks.

“I don’t know, it depends on the efficiency,” replied Pellegrino when asked whether the West Brom wins would help.

“The other day against Liverpool at half time we didn’t deserve to be 2-0 but football is about to have efficiency and not deserve.

“The most important for us is to believe in our job and our way for the next 11 games and for the next round.”

Saints dominated the first half against West Brom but the second was slightly more even.

However, Pellegrino was less concerned by the manner of victory and more that it happened.

“It’s not to deserve, it’s about efficiency,” he reflected.

“When you lose and you say we deserve like the first half against Liverpool I don’t want to talk about it like an excuse.

“When you win today we create problems. First half we play a bit better, second half we were always dangerous in counter attack.

“Now we are in the next round.”
