Glenns first for 88/89 The other day we featured Glenn Cockerill scoring on the opening day of the1988/89 campaign in a 4-0 win against West Ham. But the midfielder's effort that day was overshadowed by debutant Paul Ridout scoring twice - here he is pictured on the right heading in his first.
Neil’s contribution
Neil Maddison was a product of the Saints youth system, emerging from the same team that produced Alan Shearer and the Wallace brothers.
Over the years he played nearly 200 games for Saints, scoring 19 goals.
A combative player, who enjoyed a central midfi eld battle, many fans regretted his departure to Middlesbrough in 1997.
Maddison is pictured here performing a low-key celebration after giving Saints an early lead in Alan Ball's fi rst match in charge as manager at Newcastle in January 1994.
The match is more widely remembered for Matt Le Tissier's stunning free-kick that gave Ball a winning start on his return to Saints.
Danny's day Danny Wallace twists away from Billy Bonds' sliding tackle during Saints' 2-0 victory over West Ham in April 1984.
Danny made his first team debut at the age of 16 on 29 November 1980 at Old Trafford, replacing none other than Kevin Keegan.
He would remain Saints' youngest ever player until Theo Walcott came on as a sub against Wolves in August 2005.
Danny enjoyed great success at The Dell, becoming a fi rm crowd favourite and banging in 79 goals in 317 fi rst team appearances.
After leaving for Manchester United in 1989, Danny's career failed to match the highs of his time on the south coast and in 1996 he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, forcing him to retire from football.
Saint a Claude Buy this photoTHE date is September 1974 and a presentation to one of Saints' backroom boys, Claude Parsonage.
Not been able to find out too much information on Claude, but he was certainly a popular fella at the club judging by the fi ne turn out of mud-splattered fi rst teamers after training.
Just look at Jim Steele's mucky legs, and Mick Channon looks pretty sodden too.
Sixth-round celebration Buy this photoWHAT a fine set of gents from this photo taken in 1963 after Saints FA Cup sixth-round win over Nottingham Forest.
Who said smoking was bad for you after a match.
This was after the second replay between the two teams.
The first match at the City Ground had ended 1-1, the replay was one of the most memorable matches ever played at The Dell which ended in a pulsating 3-3 draw after extra time.
The second replay took place at White Hart Lane, and another fantastic match which resulted in a 5-0 win for Saints with two goals each for David Burnside and George O'Brien with Ken Wimshurst also getting on the scoring list.
A training run with a difference THE caption on the back of this photograph discovered deep in the Daily Echo archives says "Benali, Kenna and Widdrington on a seven-mile beach run in the rain"!! Some beach run.
This is Grand Cayman's seven-mile beach, as Francis Benali, Jeff Kenna and Tommy Widdrington stroll along shore during a Saints tour to the Cayman Islands back in 1992.
The team were there to take part in the Hampsteads International Cup where they beat Jamaica 2-0 thanks to goals from Micky Adams and Nicky Banger, and then shared a 1-1 draw with a Cayman National XI with Paul Moody scoring
On the slide in 1994 SAINTS - striker Iain Dowie in particular were on the slide at Paultons Park back in 1994.
This was the annual trip for disabled youngsters to the theme park in Ower which was organised by the Southampton taxi drivers.
Every year, the cabbies gave the children food, a goodie back and a trip to Paultons Park where they were joined by the Saints fi rst team squad.
It's a shame the Saints link no longer exists, although maybe Lawrie Mac, in his new role at St Mary's, might be persuaded to kick start the idea again.
Back in 1994, Lawrie said: "We have always said that Southampton Football Club is an integral part of the community and this sort of visit is very important."
Youth team of 80/81 THIS is one of those whatever happened to.
Whatever happened to the Saints youth team of 1980-81.
Some, such as Rueben Agboola, George Lawrence, Danny Wallace, Dave Puckett, Steve Baker and Ian Juryeff went on to enjoy distinguished careers with Southampton.
For the record, here's the line-up.
Back row (from left to right), Reuben Agboola, Pete Vacher, Joe Blochel, Colin Dixon, Martin Foyle, Alistair Sperring, Ian Baird, George Lawrence, Mark Whitlock, David Madden, Ian Juryeff.
Front row (from left to right), Russell Burtenshaw, Paul Wiltshire, Jeremy Stagg, Danny Wallace, Chris Hodge, David Puckett, Steve Richardson, Steve Baker, Tim Cole, Wayne Pratt.
Warming up in 59 SUMMER 1959, and I fancy there could be an ominous collision here with the groundsman on his grasscutter hurtling towards the players on a pre-season warm-up around The Dell.
Cliff Huxford, Saints' newly-installed skipper at the age of 22, is pictured leading the players around the pitch with goalkeeper Bob Charles.
This was going to be a momentous season for the club who were crowned champions of Division Three, despite conceding 75 goals.
It made for an entertaining season as the team also scored 106 goals.
Steve Mills 'Yesterdays' DELVING into the Daily Echo's archives, we uncovered a picture of Steve Mills from the 70s.
Nowadays, taking photos in the intimate surroundings of top flight footballers is a rarity, as they jealously guard their privacy.
But here we have Steve in 1973 putting on an LP.
After a close look at the record it turns out to be Yesterdays' by Yes, Steve was putting on his hi-tech stereo - take a butchers at the cassette player nestled next door to the turntable - pretty state-of-the-art in those days.
This photo was taken in November 1973, and at the top of the singles charts then was Gary Glitter with "I Love You Love Me Love".
Say no more!!
Osgood with his two sons HERE'S a nice photo of Peter Osgood taken at his home in Windsor in October 1975.
He is pictured with his two sons Anthony, then ten years-old and eight-year-old Mark enjoying a game of chess.
Looks like young Mark is going to make a smart move with the Queen.
Love the hairstyles too!
DON'T miss the Daily Echo every day where we feature more great pictures from Saints history.
