Southampton FC face injury crisis ahead of Johnstone's Paint Trophy final

More stories about: Johnstone's Paint Trophy

Alan Pardew says Saints are facing something of an “injury crisis” ahead of their trip to Wembley on Sunday.

Morgan Schneiderlin is the latest injury doubt for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final after he came off at half time in the 3-2 win over Hartlepool at St Mary’s last night with a tight hamstring.

Michail Antonio, Wayne Thomas and Adam Lallana also have question marks hanging over their fitness while Radhi Jaidi, Lloyd James and David Connolly are also struggling to be fit enough to be considered for a start.

On top of that Jason Puncheon, Dan Seaborne, Jon Otsemobor and Lee Barnard are also unavailable because they are cup tied.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

Pardew admitted that someone who has hardly played all season, like Simon Gillett, could yet get a dramatic nod to be in the team.

The likes of midfielder Paul Wotton and defender Chris Perry could also be in contention, and even 16-year-old Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has made just one sub appearance for the first team, could be challenging for a start.

Pardew said: “I said to Morgan at half time that he and Jose were the only players playing, but he had hurt his hamstring so we’re sweating on him a bit for Sunday.

“We’ve got a little bit of an injury crisis coming up to this final.

“Radhi is still struggling, Lloyd is struggling really, he’s not 100 per cent.

“Michail Antonio looks like he’s a doubt, David Connolly is not quite right, Wayne Thomas is on crutches.

“We’ve hit an injury crisis at a bad time for us if I’m honest because this is the nuts and bolts of the season and we have four or five players not available.

“We now fall back on the sprit of the squad which has been strong.

“I pay tribute to the players I inherited here who haven’t lost their focus – Simon Gillett has probably got a chance of playing on Sunday and he hasn’t really been given a chance by me.

“This is how football works out sometimes.”

Speaking of Adam Lallana, who missed last night’s game with a groin strain, Pardew added: “He was injured.

“I hope he won’t be injured Sunday – I’m expecting we’ll have a few more Saturday morning but we’ll see.”

He added: “We have a few players missing which gives an opportunity to our squad players who have had a terrific attitude.

“It’s funny how it might fall on the plate of somebody who hasn’t really featured much and I have no problem with that.”

Gillett has only made two sub appearances in the league all season.

Mind games are starting - all that matters is that Rickie is fit and raring to go!
Who will provide his ammunition?
There is part of me that says injuries gives others an opportunity to stake a claim - but on the otherhand where's the team understanding with all the absentees?
The mind games are working on me - I was quite confident about Sunday during this build up - now I'm not so sure!
We need some big performances from some unfancied players on these pages - but let's face it they've not let us down so far this season when it comes to the crunch.

Wotton and Perry are two complete pros and I wouldn't mind seeing them start on Sunday - but I doubt they'd last 120 minutes each, so let's hope we can do the job in 90 mins!

I think it's great that some of the lesser-sung heroes, the Wottons and Perrys, who - lets face it - are unlikely to be part of Saints' march to the premiership (either too old or not good enough to reach that level) should get this chance to play at Wemberleeeeee.

I want a shirt with "Oxlade-Chamberlaine

Don't think this will be a problem, Adam and Morgan will be fit come sunday. My only worry is the right back position. Harding covers really well, but Mills is a liability. Poor last night.
Papa Weigo had a good game, and not one offside.
Really proud of the Saints fans, the apluse for the Hartlepool second goal was generous indeed. What other set of fans would have done that.

I would happily swap the whole cup run for 6 points right now.

I think Saints will win but after the 1st 20minutes of last night's game I don't think it will be as easy as we hope it will....and I think Saints fans should realise that we need to get behind the team from the start to finish at Wembley otherwise an upset could well be on the cards!!

My only concern about the players coming in, is their lack of match fitness, so expect us to tire early, giving AP the chance to field subs at the right times to prevent us getting turned over late on.
So, having said that, I hope we get at them from the first minute and build up a big enough lead to let us enjoy the last half hour without getting worried.
AND, looking on the bright side, a few players get rested ahead of our next game, away to Brighton, and boy do we owe them for the defeat at SMS.

That IMO, is a rather poor attitude, these are the players that stuck with us when the going was rough, yes they are a little past their sell by date and a bit limited in their performance, but can you recall a game when they were not giving the best that they could? We are looking good for the future, but no harm in rewarding some of the loyalty that these guys have shown and I am sure their experience will not be wasted. When you have a run of injuries you have to go with what you have got, a mixture of youth and experience will hopefully do the trick.

I am getting a bit weary about this negative attitude. What is it about 44,500 people thinking it is worth paying a lot of money to attend, thinking it is worth celebrating, plus the ones that cannot make it, don't you understand? It is realistically the only Trophy we can win this year, it is important to win it on merit, and as you say win well.

No good wishing we had more points, the truth is the ten points that we were robbed of, will in the end scupper our play-off hopes, unless there is some kind of miracle.

I don't want to give up the ones I have (in case there's an issue at Wembley ticket office), but if anyone is going up to try & buy at Wembley let me know krandall1@tiscali.co

To those who say this cup means very little I ask how come you can't get a ticket as they were all sold out before they went on general sale, playing at wembley means you worked hard to get there, plus it is quite a long time since we picked up anything, about 34 years in fact lets hope that we end that run come sunday.

I strongly doubt that any team in the cup wanted to get knocked out of it, until they were knocked out of it of course! We are in the 1st division; this is a cup for the 2 lower divisions q.e.d. we have done well to reach the final.

Good post! I'm weary of the negativity on here too - COYRS FOR GODS SAKE!!!!!. I also believe the 10 points does not have too much to do with it but of course have hampered us. The draws against teams we should have mullered and the games where we dropped points, like Tranmere, have been our undoing.
.
I want to see Saints play well at Wembley, Davis lift the JPT - and the fans and players - and I want the club to be on a high and win the last 9 games. That's all we can do and if 6th spot is available we will take it.

I agree, I am also getting sick of snide 'nothing-trophy' comments about the JPT. So it isn't the FA Cup or the Carling Cup, but a trophy is a trophy and, IF we win on Sunday, it'll be the first one we've won in years.
Not only that, it'll add a nice gloss to what has largely been the most enjoyable season we have had for a long, long time

If you're talking cup matches then 1976! However, it could well have been the FA cup game between us and poopey. They should have died the Wednesday before the game and on the day we were the better team, depsite the scoreline!
.
Good to see Pards saying we could have and should have won against Birmingham in the Carling cup before Christmas. I felt the same on the night as, again, we had the better of them for 70 minutes of the game. Only a blistering shot right on full time saved their blushes!
.
In AP I trust - COYRS!!!
.
sw - wind-back! Yes, back to last summer - what a way we've come since then!!

Guess it was the MK Dons semi final at their place in JPT.

That old jinx appears to have gone now - just be worried about the referee. He is usually a bigger enemy than any TV jinx going by the ones I've seen this season!

That's all we can do and if 6th spot is available we will take it. . This season has been an absolute joy! Nothing, absolutely nothing has gone wrong - and long may it continue!! . Saints to win 3 - 2 on Sunday
Paul Lucas, has Davis been made Captain for the JPT final ahead of Hammond?
Can somebody please tell me the words of the Lee Barnard song being sung by the Northam last night - couldn't hear properly over in the Itchen.
IMO Chris Perry should play on Sunday, he has done well for the Club and always gives 100% when he plays and deserves his swan-song. Play-offs are still a possibility, lets just keep believing. It's great to be a SAINTS fan again, can't wait until Sunday.

You might have a point about it being the waterside area. Don't think STH's were treated any differently as I'm a STH and ordered in 1st hour on first day. Have they put the SFC logo on the envelope? No but I did suggest the only way for Saints fans to maybe get a last minute ticket would be through Carlisle... Several back home in UK did exactly that. There was at least one looking at going from here. Sadly not this peasant class pauper.

To all the knockers that say or think this trophy is beneath them... speak for yourselves but this trip to Wembley is a fabulous hard earned respite for loyal fans to enjoy and cherish.

For those who belittle the hard working players that stuck at it and ticked Pards work ethic box on his clip board... A trip to Wembley is the ultimate reward for effort not something given away lightly.

That said Pards will not let a first team league player run out onto the hallowed turf carrying an injury.

A few shameful posts in this thread and I do believe the posters know it in their hearts. If you have no faith left yourself at least have faith in the sense of the management team.

To the vast majority of fans going to Wembley and to those that couldn't get tickets or can't afford the trip wow it's going to be great to stay up all night watching from NZ I wouldn't miss it for the world and I'll be here in the threads sharing and posting as we try to bring worldwide fans closer together. NC laughed when he was asked if he'd go to AC Milan...Samuel seemed to take offence at this and called him conceited because he didn't deny it enough?? Yes, NC could have praised Pardew more, but that isn't his style on management. Just hope neither NC nor AP take any notice of this muck-stirring.

Dont want to sound negative especially with such a fantastic weekend approaching, but i cant help but agree with alot of what he says ! Pardew in my opinion has preformed a miracle on our club, and cortese`s lack of public acknowledgement of what a good job Pardew is doing worries me, and if this carries on i wouldnt blame pardew for walking - Would you ?
i know what you're saying, but i feel the journalist has piced up on a small negative and ignored all the huge positives,he fails to mention that the vast majority of saints fans love our owner , nicola and pardew......to an outsider it reads like nicola is some kind of tyrant !

In all seriousness i like him, and of course most of all marcus !, just concerns me that his lack of knowledge about football, and interference on the football side (remind you of anyone else) will cause problems with any incoming manager, let alone Pardew !!

For anyone going to Wembley, some important information iv'e just read concerning things you cant take into the stadium, firstly, if your planning to take the term 'shoot the pompey scum' to another level, you cant do it at Wembley!.
.
Secondly, flags according to wembley regulation must be less than 1 metre tall, bottled water is banned, flasks (sorry chapel enders but its true!), cans... are all banned by Wembley, any sort of drums/musical instruments are also banned... not to mention, fog horns are banned! so to summarise! we arent allowed to bring anything that might create an atmosphere. The reason for all this? it could cause a 'nuisance' to other supporters (as quoted from wembley's official site). I only realised all this myself, and i'd already bought a fog horn for the game! (waste of a fiver!).
.
Maybe they should ban singing? that could be a nuisance as well to someone.

Didn't get my 4 delivered to totton either! Royal Mail are the joke and NC should consider another company!! . You're right about it kicking off - you first ha ha!! I believe there's going to be an SFC rep in the ticket office!
I also live in Totton and mine were delivered on the first day,15th March. The OS website said the tickets were sent out in batches. The last batch was only sent out at the end of last week. By the way usher there are 25,000 empty seats at Wembley anyway,so there is no need for anyone to kick off
Just a thought but is it only Waterside area that has not recieved tickets? When I phoned today I was told that because season ticket holders were been treated better that they were Double checking their tickets to make sure they are ok, Eh! What? and thats the reason they are coming late, Doh! ok, waiting a month now, does anybody know what the hell is going on? Oh and by the way it's ok saying there are spare seats but if you paid top dollar for the best it's not really fair that cause of a co*k up that you sit in any spare seat. I still think that by putting the 'Saints' logo on the envelope it was asking for trouble.
You might have a point about it being the waterside area. Don't think STH's were treated any differently as I'm a STH and ordered in 1st hour on first day. Have they put the SFC logo on the envelope? As you say, if they did that it would be asking for trouble but that's also pointing the digit at the postie um:(
Flower49 how can you be waiting a month for your tickets. The first ones were delivered on March15th which was 9 days ago
After paying for tickets a month ago is what I meant, not waiting a month since they sent the tickets out, I know what I meant, and it was the woman on the phone line we were told to phone today that said bout STH tickets being checked and double checked to make sure there were no problems, I know she was blagging it but why the secrecy, something has gone wrong and nobody is telling us, by the way does that mean we all get our over the phone booking fee refunded as we are picking them up ourselves from Wembley? Just a thought.

just read the mail article and to me it really doesnt make that bad a read. Saints are really bigged up in it, and all our achievements this season highlighted. All it suggests is that Mr Cortese has very high standards so he has been unjustly berrated for it. All he has done is spoken the truth. We have'nt done well enough in the league-TRUE. before i get slated here I am not belittleing the teams progress this year but all NC was pointing out was the fact that we've dropped points in games we should have won at a canter. If he is up Pardews backside week in week out, complacency will start to dribble through the club. the lack of public praise for Pardew and the team keeps them on thier toes. This is a result of a pure business man at work and not a business man with a passion for football. No bad thing if you ask me. Football like business, is fuelled on results. If a business made a million one week then lost 2 million the next and so on, would they be told they are doing an amazing job??? translate that to points this season and I think you get what I mean. Mr Cortese is the man for us, Alan Pardew is the man for us, the 5 year plan is running along lovely if you ask me. I really think that NC is sat in his office feeling very pleased with himself indeed and come the end of the season, whatever happens, Pardew will get a very private pat on the back but also a school report card scenario of "c'mon, you can do better"

Sorry for the waffle and if any of this appears negative its not ment to be. this season has been great indeed and im so very looking forward to sunday(allthough my legs arent) if it wasnt for the couple of slip ups and the -10, we could be going to wembley twice but hey ho, onwards and upwards and I for one looking forward to next season all ready!!

I will also have the Saints Player on and running with audio as the tv feeds often don't start until the whistle.

I wish him luck but if Pards or Wilkie had an ounce of faith he would have been on before now. He is one of the players that had chances but couldn't tick Pards boxes.
Simon didn't enthral at the end against Gillingham and had a shocker against Torquay and that was that.
Saints have moved on. He wanted to stay at Doncaster perhaps if they had the money he could have.
If he get's a chance at Wembley he's a very lucky lad indeed and should really get out there and excel.
Chris Perry is the one I feel for... I hope he gets on

Hi Dan, thanks for the heads up on the live feeds....will also have the commentary on The Player and a stream also; with regular emails from me dad and two Brothers @ the game!!

Anyway re: Gillet that would be Doncaster of the Championship and a little futher back Blackpool - also of the Championship. Both teams that - allegedly - would have taken him if they had the money.

I wouldn't mind earning $2-3 / week for not a lot; bit like Bridge when he was at Chelski!!

You can't really impress with cameo's I like what I've seen in the past and heard. Would be a bit like Baird in the Cup Final - apart from being at fault for THE goal! - didn't he move to / still @ Fulham?

Parallels me thinks.....

Bart should be Saints number 1 keeper, nothing against Kelvin, but Bart was our Number 1 until he got injured, he lost his place and was given few chances. When he was given those chances his confidence was not there and the defence were absolutely hopeless. Remember how well he played in the Championship until he was dropped for Kelvin to play the second leg of the playoffs against Derby.

Recently in League 1 he was given another opportunity in which Saints won most their games. Bart is more confident and a better keeper now because of the new coaches etc. He is excellent at kicking, his distrubution is far better than Kelvin, he releases the ball alot earlier than Kelvin so that players are not marked. He is taller and stronger and going to be one of the best keepers in the world, people laugh but he was in goal when Poland beat Brazil 1-0 in the World Cup U20's.

He deserves to play in the final and as number 1 keeper!!
