Walkers set off on their charity walk to the JPT final

The march to Wembley begins The march to Wembley begins

TAPPING the Ted Bates statue as they set off from St Mary's this morning ten Saints mad football fans began their mammoth walk to Wembley.

Sent on their way by Olympian and Saints fan Iwan Thomas the group made their way up The Avenue and out of the city headed for Basingstoke.

Completing around 40-miles today, the men will walk 26-miles tomorrow and finish their journey with an 18-mile trek reaching Wembley just hours before the big kick off on Sunday.

Having already raised more than £4000 for the male cancer charity Everyman the guys who met on the Daily Echo Saints forum hope to reach their £5k target by lunchtime today.

The team of Southampton fans decided on their adventure after the clubs turnaround in fortunes this year.

Great effort lads we are all right behind you (in cars and coaches)!

Just found out that programmes for the final will cost £5, not too bad for a Wembley final, so that leaves us a bit of change to put in these guys buckets outside Wembley. Burgers inside Wembley will cost a fortune, don't have one, put some cash towards the cancer charity instead.

Good luck to them. I hope they make it. Think the skates only managed to raise 2 grand so they've already doubled their efforts. Dig deep and if you haven't already donated they'll take donations on the day. COYR

Yep, West Quay had them yesterday. Got mine and its a good read (except the bit by Lord Mawhinney!), and excellent value at a fiver. You wont want to lug one around at Wembley, its like a novel in size!! Lord M is going to be at Wembley, so hope all Saints fans give him serious stick, after the way he mistreated us last year...

I would like to say a big thank you to all the support the saints fans have shown the 10 walkers and all the generous donations that have been made. The walk was my husbands idea and I am exceedingly proud of him. His grandad took him to saints matches at the dell as a kid and this year is the 10th anniversary of his death from cancer, so this walk is a tribute to him. Someone early asked how they were getting on... well they reached their stop over in basingstoke tired, aching and some of the guys had bleeding feet. Keep them in your thoughts as you travel to wembley and put all your loose change in their buckets!!!
