The Saints managerial legend’s exclusive weekly column...
Vignal has a hard act to follow
Gregory Vignal
Gregory Vignal

OF COURSE I join everybody else at the moment in praying that we will still be at the Championship level next season.

But I am sure that many more gritty performances like the point gained at Blackpool and the win against Leicester will ensure our survival.

One other factor in recent games has been the three penalties awarded for us and converted by our left back, Gregory Vignal.

Coincidentally in the home game with Leicester, the guests in the Ambassador's Room were delighted to see on my table Reuben Agboola, Hughie Fisher, Jim Steele and that other left back who used to score penalties, David Peach.

Whilst we all agree Vignal can certainly put them away, he has got an awful long way to go before he gets anywhere near Dave's record, which apparently is still the best ever for a British player and I believe equals the world record for consecutive penalties scored which is shared between Gillingham and Saints.

If Dave had been able to convert one more, he would have held the record on his own - but at present shares it with a French star of the past, Just Fontaine.
