Survival on a wing and a prayer

THE end of the season comes much quicker than people think and in lots of cases want.

Anyone as old fashioned as me who still looks up ceefax and teletext will notice that each day for the last week lists of players released by their clubs are put out.

It is not uncommon now for as many as eight or nine from lower division clubs to be let go.

This is the sad side of the game.

While the odd one like Darren Huckerby at Norwich City will probably have no trouble getting another club many of the others from the bottom two divisions might struggle, particularly those between 30-35- years-old. This is the non-glamorous side of the business.

While individuals are looking for survival in the game, last Sunday marked an amazing lastmatch in the Championship where surprisingly I think only Scunthorpe v Colchester had little interest seeing that both teams were already relegated yet apparently it produced a wonderful 3-3 draw for those 6,000 fans bothering to turn up.

I hoped the previous week that the good Lord would turn up at St Mary's last Sunday wearing our colours and my prayers were certainly answered along with many thousands of others obviously.

Very rarely has such a dramatic last game been seen, even in those years when the Saints were hanging on to their Premiership position.

The game had everything starting with the good weather which enabled our supporters to come out in their full colour with a magnificent crowd of nearly 32,000 and the beautiful surface which earned our groundstaff a deserved award.

It would be quite easy to say it was the crowd that did it and I wouldn't argue with that but to those who say why haven't they been coming before' the reality is that during a season it is down to the team. The way they play and the results they get that decides how many people come through the gates once you are out of the Premiership and the opposition is not as glamorous as Man United, Chelsea etc.

So the turnout last week whether the players like it or not was not for them, it was for the club and it is a sharp reminder to everyone that the club is more important than any individual.

I think the right result was produced although it meant more than a few fingernails were bitten off in the process.

Themanager, Nigel Pearson, ended his initial 14-game tenure having won over the masses and rightly so.

It is easy to say he should have been appointed earlier - the simple fact is he wasn't available any earlier.

It is also easy to say that the club should have been looking for appointments before George went to Scotland but the fact is I don't think even he thought he would come top of the shortlist until the final interview.

At least two of the other candidates apparently said they would love the job but did not want to start until their league games were over.

That is all water under the bridge now.

The club has retained its position with 11 points more than was needed last year to escape relegation and only four points less than the team had in its first season down in the Championship.

We all know this has been a difficult five months and I personally would like to praise the chairmanship of Leon Crouch in that period and he joined with me, Lee Hoos and the other members of the board in giving themanagement total support which I was pleased to see Nigel acknowledged this week.

The first part of the equation was answered with our final league position.

As I speak the second half has yet to be finalised.

The traditions of the club cannot be changed, the way forward has yet to be finalised but not being a member of the PLC board I am in the same position as Nigel Pearson and Mary Corbett.

We all love the club, have all done our bits to help out in our own different ways, none of us know exactly where we stand going forward but this will surely be resolved in the next few days.

Whatever happens I would like to thank the loyal supporters, particularly those who come through thick and thin and travel to the away fixtures as well in all different types of weather.

So let's see what the summer will bring - at least the sun is shining.

With the return of Lowe and Wilde to run the club, I rather fancy that it is McMercenary's survival that is relying on 'a wing and a prayer'!
His recent input has not been worth what he has taken out!

Mint, what type of name is that. Your mum on some hard drugs when she named you! Lawrie is not a leech he is a genuine football person who loves the saints. Not like rupert lowe life who is a parasite coming back to satisfy his ego and bank balance.

It's a bit of each to be honest. Lawrie led us through our best days and still has a genuine love for the club so I think there is s till a role for him. His image has been tainted by the fact the he has wlaked out on us twice (to Sunderland and alongside Souness) and allegedly draws £75,000 in his current role. Personally I'd still have him close to the club but not on a salaried basis. We simply can't afford it. All acedmic of course cos Lowe is returning and they both seem to arrogant to put their personal feeling s ofr one another to one side and work together in the interests of the club.

The way some people have a go at Lawrie is quite disgusting. The man was a hero for Saints so leave him alone. He deserves our respect and if you cant comply go and support Pompey they need all the support they can get.

On the subject of Pompey....Well done Fulham for becoming the latest team (until Cardiff) to beat them and congratulations on staying up! Not that i care too much, but i don't give much hope for their team being in the right frame of mind for Wembley next sat. In contrast Cardiff will be really pumped up for it! They would LOVE to stuff it up the the old enemy by winning the ENGLISH cup final as we keep reminding them! Apart from that we'd never hear the end of it from their success starved supporters if the Skates won, would we??

McMenemy spate the dummy out over Sourness and has paid for it really. He's an old man who is still prepared to use his position to help others and even if he's still paid by the club he certainly gave us plenty to cheer back in the day.

Who are these pri*ks that criticise Lawrie Mac?? The club does'nt need mouthy twats like 'Mint & Kevin.' I doubt if they have 2 brain cells between them.....by the way that statue out front of the stadium....it's someone called Ted Bates...ever heard of him???

Most posts say that Lawrie WAS a Legend!
My view is that he lost his legend status when he walked out on the club to 'head north' to his 'spiritual home'!
You just do not not 'opt in' or 'opt out' of being 'Southampton through and through' as the fancy takes you!
What has he done since his return, other than increase his bank balance?
He did well as the club's 'mouth-piece' when he took the credit for what the manager did, but can any of his fans tell me,'what has his contribution been since he returned'?
Whatever it is, I cannot see it!

Administration?

Isn’t that what happens that what happens to Pompey when the FA introduce new transfer regulations to prevent money laundering next season.

Bye Bye, Russian mafia. Lets see how Pompey get on relying on the income of 17k supporters.

Ted Bates and Lawrie Mac were the two longest serving managers in league, until the genius Sir Alec F came along. Those who criticise players, manages, or others from switching clubs do not understand modern football. Strachan, Hoddle, Burley and others all left for "higher" things. Those that didn't - Gray, Wiggley, Sturrock .. Get a grip you moaners. Stop having a go at those who know more about football than you, but love the Saints equally well.

So Jeff, you think that Lawrie is a Southampton Football Club LEGEND!
My dictionary definition of a Legend is:
a popular story handed down from earlier times which may or may not be true!
Perhaps you would remind us what date he had Saints top of the Premier League, because I can find no record of him getting there for even ten minutes!
Perhaps you could explain how he suddenly arrived at Middlesboro! Did he mistake the red and white stripes?
Can you tell me what he has done for the club since his return?
No, I do not expect anyone to work for the club for nothing, but would like to know what has been achieved for that money!
If players can be castigated for turning in a poor performance, then is it not reasonable to criticise a board member whose only job seems to be to regale us with all the big names he has rubbed shoulders with!
It is more than a quarter of a century since the club had any success that can be laid at McMercenaries door, and I think that he has milked that for long enough!
Winning the FA Cup and McMenemy are history!
Today the club has just survived relegation to Div 1!

You need to get a better dictionary Sam, I mean Benny, legend also means - famous person or event, it can also mean an inscription.
So are you saying Alan Ball is not a legend? Your own Mr Dickinson neither?
Tut, tut, Sam/Benny or what other name you may wish to post under, you know Jeff was referring to the old 1st division and what’s this 'Boro stuff, red and white stripes, did you mean Sunderland?
I know what you are saying though, it was all a while ago and he has milked it, but then again wouldn’t you?
Also don’t forget, PFC fans still go on about how long they kept the F.A. Cup for and how long ago was that!
If you do win on Saturday, don’t forget that by Sunday it will be history, in the past, yesterday’s news, so don’t go on about it!!!!!!
But I bet you will MILK IT for years to come.

I can't speak for anyone else but, IF Pompey win the cup, I will milk it for a year, because that is the length of time that we would hold it.
Should we retain it, then it will be 'more milk for the boys'!
You are right that, whatever the result, on Sunday it will be confined to the history books.
You mention the length of time that Pompey held the cup! Glad to see that you are interested in history!
Heaven forbid that we should hold the cup for such a period, for the same reason!
The amusing thing is that, virtually every Pub in Pompey claim that the FA Cup was held, for safe keeping, in their cellar!

Hear Hear. Lawrie Mac gave me and thousands of others many years of pleasure watching the fantastic teams he built. He left because the club would not match his ambitions. Now where have we heard that before?
