Saints tight-lipped over Adkins' future
7:00am Tuesday 23rd October 2012 in Saints News
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Saints have put up a wall of silence over questions regarding the future of manager Nigel Adkins.
The under fire boss admitted after Saturday’s defeat at West Ham that he was unsure as to how long he would be given to revive Saints’ fortunes after six defeats in eight games back in the Premier League.
Bookies have cut the odds on him to go while talk has been rife among worried fans that Adkins could end up being the fall guy for a start that has seen Saints ship more goals in their first eight games than any other side since the Premier League started.
Saints have refused the chance to clarify Adkins’ future.
Instead they are remaining silent on that point, which is leading to further speculation that he might not even be in charge for the visit of Tottenham on Sunday, despite having led the club to back-to-back promotions.
Adkins has become a popular figure amongst the club’s supporters after delivering such fantastic success but football is rarely a place for much sentiment, especially when there is so much cash involved in staying in the top flight.
Most reasonable fans will hope that he is given more time to try and turn things around, but whether Saints chairman Nicola Cortese will agree remains to be seen.

That said who else is out there. We do not want or need Dirty Harry.
Leave him be and lets hope for a massive improvement - especially on some of his slightly odd substitutions.
Anyway - he is doing a better job that I could.

Look I'm all in favour of clarity, but let's not demand the backing of the Chairman or he's a goner!
In my opinion - if Adkins is sacked we will definitely get relegated. The players just won't perform ans they will lose their mentor who got them believing they weere good enough for the Premier League. If he goes so does the team spirit - only an opinion of course.
Coming down for the Spurs game - first live match of the season. Haven't missed much of any game this season with the internet providing a much cheaper alternative! Will get Leeds ticket on Sunday too...guess that will be my fill of live football this season in the flesh, unless there is a considerable change in pricing!

The constant problem for the last three years has been a lack of concentration at key times in defence. This was able to be be covered over to a certain extent in League One and the Championship. There are no hiding places in the Premier League and that is what we are now finding out.
Top quality defenders needed to be brought in in June. Everyone knows that and any blame for our current position needs to lie with whoever was responsible for not making that happen. Forget excuses as they won't get us any points. We are now nearly a quarter of the way through the season so please concentrate on making the decisions that will get us 50 points by May 2013.

However, I also happen to believe that if the PR department at Saints were doing their job they would have buried this feud with the Echo; they would also move to quash rumours concerning team selection & formation, the training ground issues and a lot of other stuff which appears to be dragging Saints good name down. Chinese whispers are good for no business and that's what Saints are - a business which could do with free publicity from a rag like the Echo.
Media bandwagon rolls on - unlike the Adkins bus!

NC and the fans need to let NA be and let him perform his job. We need stability on this team and sacking a manager after just eight games, ESPECIALLY after all he has done for this club, is TOTALLY unfair. He has driven us to two back to back promotions, the least we can do is give him a chance to get a full season under him. At the very least, give him a half a season to see if he can turn this thing around. There is no other manager out there who can motivate a team better than NA. Let us show him the loyalty he deserves after two years of so many triumphs!
But if Cortese thinks NA is going to drive us to two promotions and a relegation (back to back), then he won't let sentiment stand in his way and we'll be managed by someone else. Hopefully not the saggy jowelled pensioner from Dorset.

There is something of the vulture about this - the paper just hovering expectantly waiting for the death throes to end so it can chew over the corpse. Nigel Adkins has earned the right to be treated with more dignity. His problem is the defence. The facts are that the club failed to sign sufficient new defenders. The evidence is there that it tried to sign more, Buttner being the prime example. For whatever reason that became a fiasco which ended up with him going to United. Managers are responsible for identifying the players they want to buy, Chairmen are responsible for negotiating their signature. I think it inconceivable that Adkins hadn't identified other defenders. The fact we failed to provide for the area on the pitch where just about everyone knew we needed to improve is as much down to the Chairman as the Manager. Of course tactics come into the equation and most would agree some strange decisions have been taken principal among which is the dropping to the bench and often substitution of Rickie Lambert. Everyone knows the team plays and feels better when he's playing. It's obvious Nigel will have to change tack and play a bit uglier to grind out the points until the defence can be shored up in January. He must know that now. If that doesn't happen then he will be proved to be naive. And as we can only sign free agents (and there aren't a mass of them with the credentials we need) it may be easier to bring in an experienced Premier League defence coach. Right now though the responsibility for our lowly position is one that is shared across the club, from Board Room to Manager. The Chairman therefore needs to give the Manager more time to sort this out. After all, even the best Manager in the world would struggle to get this defence to work right now so bringing in a 'name' is not likely to provide immediate success.

play here, with the fixtures we had early
on i for one thought we would be near the bottom, once we get all our players
fit and play teams of a similar quality i believe we will start to climb the table.
Adkins needs time with all his players fit
to prove he is the manager all the fans
know he is.Unfortunately i think if we lose Spurs game then NC will fire him.

I for one would be really disappointed if the Club were to remove Adkins, he's done a great job in getting us to where we are and if you take out the games against Man City/Utd/Everton & Arsenal being right at the start of the season, that we were never going to get anything from we are not too far away from where I'd thought we'd be.
Back the team and back the Manager.

The Echo are really trying to attack Nicola but they've given up with "anti" stories about him so they attempt to put pressure on what they think is the "weak link" within the Club.
.
The problems between the Club and the Echo go back years, long before Nicola arrived. I could tell a story about a meeting between the then CEO (who's name must not be mentioned) and the Echo about the sacking of Stuart Gray and the appointment of wGS on a Sunday.
.
It was all about the Echo printing stories about £2m payoff for Gray (wrong the real figure was less than £0.5m) and clearing stories with the Club first.
The Echo chose the "freedom of press route", while the Club wanted to "clear all stories first" before printing. That was all in 2002, nothing has changed.

At least wait 'til January and see what he can get in the window then.
As a manager, you live and die by the signings you make and Nigel has been pretty shrewd in the market so far, but even I have to admit, it's looking bleak. Our centre backs just aren't good enough - but for Gods sake, give the man a break !!!!!

Saints simply boycott the echo group of newspapers by giving them no access. hence the echo publishing what they can on the indirect and 3rd party resources they have. There is no two way situation to resolve. The echo are actually in a stronger position without official access. For them it mean they can publish more diffuse articles whilst obviously dodging the libel laws carefully etc etc... I am not saying I think its right. In fact I am not generally a fan of UK media. But the loss is all SFC on this boycott the way I see it. We are all here commenting, and while doing so are exposed to banners on the page. Thats all revenue for the Echo. And absolutely no benefits whatsoever for SFC. NC may be a great investment banker, but the boycott shows no footballing business sense whatsoever.

So what course of action, in your opinion, actually IS a sign from a club that they're going to keep their manager?
r-a-pound and will try to stay in the PREM at all costs. Not a strategy I think is wrong but it will mean a point at least against tottenham or Nigel will go.

The trouble is that assistant only had lower leagues experience. Couple that with Nigel's own experience, the fact Saints have only ONE player with any decent premier league experience and a club head honcho that has no history in football its clear where the real problem is. The solution is not a good one if you are in NAs position, it means having your position look undermined and getting in some help. The evidence of this is clear after our 8 games. Its not quality thats has undone us, its having that bit of "cuteness" I believe is the correct football term and that only comes with experience. We busily signed attacking "talent" when in my opinion we should have been looking at where the advice was going to come from ? I think it was assumed we could get off to some sort of a start by outscoring teams and then find our feet. This was undersestimating the premier league imo.
If he goes it wont be like a magic wand to start winning games but, I do think if he keeps saying he wont change the playing style that could be his undoing.

For what it's worth, I think the club could do a lot more in the community and with the media.
If I were NC, I'd be looking at every possible way to promote the club's image and make sure the facts (when necessary and appropriate) were on view so as to keep stupid rumours to a minimum; that's the kind of guy I am.
Alas, I'm also the kind of guy who'd be pee-poor at running a successful football club. So, if you want someone like me in charge, expect to be back in League 1 sometime soon.
As for the articles being comment on, some of us (you, me and we know most of the others) come here to share our views, see what other fans think and have a laugh - mainly together. We'd still read and comment if the headline read 'No News Today' and the article stretched no futher than saying: 'Nothing to report, have a nice day. Yours, Adam Leitch.'
Anyway, I've some French students waiting to learn about the second conditional. So, I'll just end by saying, if I were you, I'd be careful what I wished for. I've nothing else to report, have a nice day.

The facts are very simple, over eight games - almost a quarter of the season - we shipped an average of three goals per game. Each successive game has shown that there have been no change whatever in tactics. Indeed, Nigel has publicly stated he will retain a tactic of attacking football!
The fact that there has been no defensive improvement has highlighted Nigel's naivety at this level. Those of you who have been saying we should stick with Nigel - admirable though the sentiment is - clearly do not understand the importance of the results criteria that dominates the raison d'être of the Premiership.
I too would support Nigel if I could see any small glimpse of improvement - perhaps only shipping one or two goals per game! However, that is not the case, and he persists in continuing with the same tactics.
It is my view that he is out of his depth right now, and needs to be replaced as soon as possible before it's too late.
I will be very sad for him if he has to go, after all he has done a wonderful job getting our beloved Saints to the Premiership. But that's it - he now needs to hand over to a manager who has the nous to keep us in this league. Nigel's refusal to consider a Plan B says it all.
Who to replace him if the inevitable comes to pass? I don't have a problem with 'Harry' (by the way, people should stop calling him a crook in public - that's libellous as he was cleared by a jury of any wrong doing!), or an approach to Glen Hoddle. I think either would be good for the Club.
The bottom line is what is best for SFC, and not to harbour deep prejudices against certain individuals. I'd vote for the devil himself if he (or she!!) could get us out of this downward spiral.

sual.
A lot of the "meat" in the footy burgers started its life clinging to a carcus. Then a high pressure hose blasted the "matter" of the bones and this was drained through a floor sluice. Then the slurry was crushed in a vented press and the now solid pulp was bagged and sent to a "meat processing plant" , where it was added to minced offal ( the "willies" ) , rusk, other binders and a small amount of actual muscle meat and then churned and mixed, finally seasoned and then shaped and packed.

GLVialli? come on surely his record is so poor and he's out of touch.
GWS.. nope.. his win record outside of scotland is less than 33% (half that of Nigel.
Kevin Keegan? lost his first 8 games straight at newcastle...then he started to win a few by using 433 system!
ANy of the above could see us go down.. would any of them stick it out and bring us back? Nope!
Nigel Adkins has my support. Bit of ars kicking and nursing the wounded legs and egos back from shell shock for now, Add a couple of players in at Christmas and we'll be off like a robbers dog.
Still only a couple of wins from mid table... .COYR together as one!!!!

True, we should be taking from the likes of Wigan, Fulham, Wet Spam, and anyone who was at those games will know that we dominated the first halves without really threatening, then inexplicably collapsed in moments of madness. However, I do feel we would have had a stronger start against these sides with a fit Jack Cork. We all know our centre backs aren't quite there for this level, and were screaming for signings over the summer, but we were supposedly in for Buttner, and for all we know, might have been sniffing around the likes of Michael Dawson only to be told they want 90 grand a week. We clearly need established defenders, but not if they're gonna bankrupt us again.
But we're forgetting that much of the defending needs to be done in the middle of the park, and for me we're getting bypassed here a lot of the time. James Ward-Prowse has started ok but isn't there yet, Steven Davis is just starting to find his feet, Corky injured all season. Add that to injuries to Fox, Richardson, Butterfield, Clyne, and therefore forced to play Yoshida at full-back (I thought he did ok at West Ham apart from his impact going forward). NA hasn't yet had a chance to field his first choice team consistently, to at least give the boys a chance to settle at this level.
We were never going to keep marching on and on without getting found out, and teams like Wigan have earned their stripes at this level. We need to be much tougher in the tackle, and let teams know we are there, then play our attractive football. Frankly, I think we'd kill for a Kevin Nolan right now.
The only problem I have with NA is his insistence on playing Guly week in, week out. I just don't see what he brings. A few nice touches here and there, but no end product, no real impact, and no desire to win the ball, leaving our already vulnerable defence constantly exposed.

Little Saints and making friends with the echo....I think results will make more little saints than resolving things with the Echo. 2 promotions so far helps in that respect. Improving up the table will do that. Getting a European spot in a few years time will do that too. And I BELIEVE THAT NIGEL IS THE MAN TO GET US THERE.
As for revenue streams yes I suppose getting publicity will help generate a small amount of income in the local area, but i feel that generating interest across the world will generate more. Generating income in the African and Asian markets for instance.
We haven't seen the best of Tad Lee, Yoshida or Mayuka yet, for various reasons but I feel in time they will cement their place in the team, come good and perform regularly (in position) and help us get the results we need to progress in this division while leading to increased merchandising sales overseas far and beyond what is being lost by not talking to the Echo.
And I believe too that in time the Echo will come to the Club cap in hand because they will want to be part of the success and support the Club rather than look to dig the dirt.
All of which will only happen if NC keeps faith in NA imho.

This was never going to be easy and I really do think that when Ramirez & Cork are back in the side we will improve.
My only criticism of Nigel would be the defensive areas, I do feel the pressure on Nigel has affected his judgement here. I would like to see him settle on a keeper and give him a good run in the side, it takes time for a keeper to settle and understand the defense. But then I don't know what has happened in training, so I can't be too harsh on Nigel on this without knowing the facts. I would also like to see young Luke Shaw given an opportunity. I know he is young, but if your good enough your old enough. But again, I am not seeing what goes on in training every day, so this is Nigel's decision.
As Nigel clearly stated in a very honest interview that he picks the team and he will stand or fall from his decisions.
I hope Nigel and Nicola can keep their heads, when all around them are losing theirs! Pressure can cause a manager to make strange decisions, I hope the club can help him with a few simple words (to Nigel, not to the media)... "We support you"! He may then just be able to pull it round.

The echo is a decent local media with many of sfc customers reading it but ignored by the club. Is that good business?
If schwi-man was any where near as shrewd as they say surely he would use this local media to his own rewards?
The evidence is mounting by the day, how can 1 bloke be so destructive. It is alleged that when left in a room alone he upsets himself!
g the echo and the media at large started big time with Lowe (very) but NC has not been much better.
Sfc had a great profile in the mainstream media under big Lawrie becuase he knew had to work them, indeed we were many neutrals favorite football team in the early 80's..
Think on this, when average players can command 50.000 per week...( 8 mini buses a week..400 a year!) how hard would it be to sponsor most secondary schools within a 30 mile radius...except east..with a SFC minibus, free tickets, flags, training tours and on and on making all southern kids realise to be a 'south'erner is to be a 'South'ampton fan...
Our large scale media and "effective" community work is crap..we ever want to be a permanent top ten team then the area has got to live and breathe SFC, it does not and that is a complete lack of vision inside the club.
Be warned BHA could end up a bigger club than us...and i have no pleasure in saying it.

I would be gutted if Nigel Adkins is sacked, I simply can't think of any other manager who I would rather have at this moment in time. I think he is a breath of fresh air in football management. I truly felt for him during his interview after the West Ham game, he looked like a man who clearly has pressure on him. I think as a club we need to stand strong and together, show we are different by not getting tangled up in the media circus and following the usual pattern of other clubs. At the first time of trouble since Adkins took over we as fans seem, in most cases, to be showing a strong unity and support for the man. I hope that the club are also doing this, but I don't need them to tell me, I just want them to tell Nigel. Then Nigel can move forward and do his job. I hope in the corridors of power at St Mary's talks are taking place between Nicola and Nigel that confirm the support the club have for him.
But one thing is for sure... I SUPPORT NIGEL ADKINS.
After saving the club I love and exceeding all my hopes the past two seasons, I owe them. My four season tickets were an absolute bargain.
It's easy to support the club and the management in the good times - but it's in the tough times that our support is most needed and should be given.

I think if you look at the way Nigel Adkins operates he is a man of principle and no push over. Right the way back to when he was at Scunny and the way he left there to join Southampton, it was on his terms with his head held high.

NA is shell shocked by his early experience in the PL, it is a different world, just look at his post match interview last Saturday, he was practically in tears.
It's like moving a very bright, capable, top of the class, 5 year old in to a class of 8 year olds.
Without any additional help the 5 year old will crumble under the pressure.
For NA to say he intends to carry on with the same tactics, just underlines how much he is struggling.
If he doesn't change his ideas then neither will the results.
There is no one at SMS on or off the pitch with PL experence.
Like the majority of fans I want NA to stay as long as Ted Bates did!

I think Nigel Adkins is a proud man who will do it his way, his footballing methodology are a huge part of the Southampton way. I am sure that NA would walk if Nicola brought in somebody to work with him, the only way this could happen is if it was somebody that Nigel Adkins knew and somebody he may think he could work with. Otherwise it won't happen, in my opinion.

Football is a business at the end of the day not just a game.
Why cant he just say look, this style has not worked lets try plan b, there is too much quality in this league who can change a game in 2 minutes like on Saturday.

In my life time I have known a number of people who have eventually been sacked, as a result of not asking for a bit of help when they needed it --- only for less able people replace them.
I realise that asking for help is difficult and may be seen as weakness.
Whether NA is too proud to ask or NC is too proud to suggest but it would be tragic for Saints, if pride led to NA losing his job.

But one thing is for sure... I SUPPORT NIGEL ADKINS.

This was never going to be easy and I really do think that when Ramirez & Cork are back in the side we will improve.

The echo is a decent local media with many of sfc customers reading it but ignored by the club. Is that good business?

Yes some of these are fairly far flung but footy fans travel....
Saints are missing out on huge advertising and promotion potential and fail to appreciate the way a club should be marketted.
There is no expertise in the club to embrace modern media and advertising potential to try and attract new fans and new interest.

Not all of the change is saints' fault, but some of it is. I can't bear the fact that there ae so many arsenal shirts in Hampshire, for a start. Whilst many may think that NA is being dictated to by the powers that be at St Mary's, I don't think for a second that is the case. I think if you look at the way Nigel Adkins operates he is a man of principle and no push over. Right the way back to when he was at Scunny and the way he left there to join Southampton, it was on his terms with his head held high. Otherwise it won't happen, in my opinion.TEBOURBA wrote: NA is shell shocked by his early experience in the PL, it is a different world, just look at his post match interview last Saturday, he was practically in tears. How difficult can it be to get an experienced coach in, on a short term basis, to help NA find his feet in the PL? --- what sensible objections could anyone have to this idea ?--- it would help NA and the team. It needs a caring Chairman, who understands the game, to support NA in his hour of need and make this happen. Maybe that's what's lacking.A very good analogy, but the truth is, as we keep saying, that we don't know for sure, you can only take what NA said about his relationship with NC in his previous interviews, as the truth. It could change if we don't get some results, but no point in speculating it isn't helping the mood.
A point at home against spurs is needed (and will be celebrated by right-minded fans of all views on adkins), or else I think the calls for a strong deputy, and probably a we manager, will become more intense.

Is it because there is no information about the Saints in any of them is the reason why I have never read a single copy of any of them? No mention of the Lymington Times I see, I have read that but it makes your arms ache.
the one about the sex change Bishop, who on the wettest day since records began, made a mercy dash to Buckingham Palace to help an ill X Factor contendor who was having an affair with a cabinet minister's drug addicted daughter who's married to that Prem footballer who adored Jimmy Savile yet called Nelson Mandela a sh!te and then kidnapped and tortured his beloved one-eyed cat Cetewayo.........

For what it's worth, that's a formation I'd be regularly considering away from home. However, at home, I'd start 4-3-3, but with something of the 4-1-2-1-2 feel about it. Either way, whether I agree or disagree with them (or the selections), I'm more than happy to let Nigel make his decisions because he knows his players and the opposition much better than me.

If NC is actually considering employing this shyster, in any capacity, then it shows he is completely out of touch with the wishes of 99.99999% of the supporters who pay NC's wages.
I can't think of anything worse.
Redknapp shouldn't be allowed within 20 miles of SMS.
NA is a good man and a good manager, he needs an experienced wise head brought in for short while to hold on to the saddle of the bike whilst NA learns to ride in the PL.
NA is no fool, given a bit of support, in no time at all he'll be riding like Chris Hoy!!

But one thing is for sure... I SUPPORT NIGEL ADKINS.

NA deserves to be given a full season in the Premiership. He has led the club to two promotions. He is entitled to have the chance to develop his judgement in the top flight. He deserves to be allowed to make misakes. All good managers, in and out of football, are better for one or two failures. As a season ticket holder, the only comment I would make is that the defence doesn't seem to be organised. Zonal marking can be a complicated message to communicate, especially when there may be language problems. I would close man-mark again Nigel, as it is easier for everyone to understand and accountability is clearer. Good luck! Remember it is afterall a sport first and foremost, so don't stop enjoying the challenge!”
They say you make your own luck but having had as bad a fixture list as the Saints were dealt, and then losing your star signing after only a couple of hours on the field, is just too much to bear.
But, as I said before, let's aim for a clean sheet, score a goal and get 3 points. All the exciting passing game can come back over time, but just stop letting goals in. Please!!
