Bookies see Harry as the next Saints boss
8:30am Tuesday 23rd October 2012 in Saints News
Harry Redknapp
Nigel Adkins is still not the bookies’ favourite to be the next Premier League manager to get the sack – but odds compilers are already taking bets on his possible successor.
The pressure is mounting on Adkins following Saints’ poor start to the season, and the manager himself has admitted he is unsure how much time he will be given to turn things around.
The bookies still don’t fancy him to be the next to go though.
Mark Hughes, whose QPR side prop up the table having failed to win a game yet this season, is the favourite at 5-4 with Adkins trailing in at 3-1. The next shortest priced is 20-1 on Reading boss Brian McDermott.
Despite Adkins still having his job, it hasn’t stopped the bookies speculating on a possible successor, even if there is plenty of doubt over their wisdom in pricing Harry Redknapp as favourite at 7-4.
The former Saints boss would not be a popular choice among many fans and the general consensus is his style of management could be at odds with the way in which executive chairman Nicola Cortese is trying to run the club.
Saints have been there before with Rupert Lowe employing Redknapp to try and keep the club in the Premier League having got off to a bad start under Steve Wigley. On that occasion Saints were relegated from the top flight.
Many neutrals believe there is a chance that Saints might go for a foreign coach who is used to working in the kind of continental style set-up behind the scenes at St Mary’s.
Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is rated as second favourite as 6-1 while those who believe Cortese might go Italian could be looking at ex-Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri at 28-1.
Other Italians towards the top of the bookies list include Delio Rossi and Fabio Capello, left, while fiery Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio is priced at 33-1.
The bookmakers obviously aren’t sure though as they have British managers well represented in their list as well.
Alan Curbishley (25-1), Alan Shearer (25-1) and Chris Powell (33-1) all figure while a trip of former Saints managers are also up there with Dave Jones (33-1), Glenn Hoddle (33-1) and Gordon Strachan (33-1) all tipped too.
The biggest outsider is Matt Le Tissier at 500-1 but, given his fractious relationship with Cortese, most punters will probably keep their powder dry on that one, even if they do believe that Adkins may leave, which is certainly far from a done deal yet, no matter what the bookies think.

Now speaking the other day with a friend about possible replacements for NA (I like hopefully many others do not want him to leave), my friend being a Leicester fan and we both agreed that Chris Powell would be a very good choice, many years at Leicester as a coach and a superb individual, plus his credentials as the current Charlton manager including a fantastic promotion season from league One to the Championship.
The only issue I'm finding at the moment is a manager with Premier League experience, then we start hitting the Mick McCarthy, Owen Coyle, Steve Kean and so on realm.

1/ will not work with DoF (Reed).
2/ will not promote 50% of the youth team to the 1st team squad.
3/ will not accept a "team" (Nicola, Reed & Nigel) dealing with "transfer policy", he wants a chairman/ceo who just writes "blank cheques" which Nicola will not do.
4/ will not accept a transfer policy of buying young up-and-coming players i.e. JayR, Clyde. He will want to buy 32+ year olds on big wages.

If NC does want a change (and I personally would just back NA fully in the transfer window), he should do it ahead of January, when the person coming in can actually do something about the squad. The idea of Harry coming in and moaning about the squad from day one like he did last time is too damaging to consider.

Maybe we did just did get promoted a year too early and the are having to try and do too much too soon without the experience or resources.

Seriously, this should be irrelavant anyway, as Nigel should have more time. We need to see how we get on by Xmas, and then see what we can do to strengthen the back five in the window before we make any rash decisions.
To be fair in every paper or pundit's predictions, we were either going to be relegated, or in 17th. So, nowt has changed. Our goal was, and should be, 17th this year.
We'd allle glory, but we need to ge back a sense of reality. If we can finish with 3 sides below us in the first year back, it will be a hell of an achievement. And I still firmly believe we're in line for that.

NC is businessman and knows that if he made the decision to bring back 'arry he would lose a significant number of paying customers through the turnstiles - he isn't that stupid. Daniel Levy obviously thought he had taken Spurs as far as he could and got rid.
Daily Mirror is saying today that SAINTS will be in for Michael Dawson in the January transfer window - would be a good CB signing.

I do think it's time for NC to publicly back NA.
People say it would be the kiss of death but NC extending NA's contract by another 2 years or so would stop all this unhealthy speculation in its tracks and give NA and the players a huge confidence boost.
It would show NC, in a much better light and may inspire the team to greater things! -- any better ideas welcomed!!!

If you were following Saints under Redknapp's spell as manager, you most certainly wouldn't rate him. He took over a team twelve months after they sat in a Champions League place and got them relegated. He did no better than Steve Wigley. In fact, given the injuries Wigley faced, he probably did worse.

If Redknapp returns we lose half the supporters.
Why? Because he alienated players by publically berating them - intelligent managers like Ferguson keep it behind closed doors; he was tactically inept as evinced by the number of times we lost 2 goal leads at home; and he brought in overpaid, overaged mercenaries, such as Oliver Bernard.
Redknapp is without doubt overrated. He's only ever achieved anything by spending big - if not on transfer fees on high wages and signing on fees.
At West Ham United he had the third highest wage bill in the Premiership and what did he win? He got the sack and left them in a financial mess in the late 1990s.
Even when he got Pompey promoted to the Prem he was lucky enough to have a Chairman in Mandaric who was willing to spend while the rest of the division cut back due to the ITV Digital deal falling through.
He won the FA Cup and almost got the club annihilated and jumped ship at the first decent opportunity.
At Tottenham he had a real chance of winning the title last season but he blew it. His head was turned by the England job and all that extra cash he'd be earning. He got sacked again after failing to achieve what was expected.
The FA - hardly reknowned for making great judgments - even they saw he would be a liability.
Whatever anyone says about his financial dealings or his trustworthiness the fundamental point is he's not a very good manager. Whatever NC does with respect to NA, there's no way he'd appoint Redknapp - thank God!
