Saints fans back Adkins to carry on

NIGEL ADKINS NIGEL ADKINS

Saints fans have given Nigel Adkins an overwhelming vote of confidence.

More than 5,000 votes have been cast by fans in a massive dailyecho.co.uk poll asking whether the under-fire manager still has their support and a landslide 78 per cent have backed him.

The vast majority voted that he did have their support as he is working in very difficult circumstances, while only 22 per cent felt that Saints’ current situation was ‘all his fault’.

The public support will be a huge boost to Adkins with the club declining the chance to publicly back him themselves this week.

Who's fault is it that we find ourselves in the bottom 3 (looks like we will spend the whole season down there), well its who ever was in charge of the budget for transfers. I don't know if that's NA or NC. The players we brought in were needed of course they were, but every saints fan was screaming for some central defenders (proven premiership quality), we knew we'd score goals but keeping them out is proving to be an impossible task. Off topic: Why was rickie on the bench, he should be the first name on the team sheet! I personally think that nige is treading on thin ice!

Dear Mr Murray,

Mr Nicola Cortese doesn't like your paper, I think it's time you accepted that.

The speculation regarding Mr Adkins position, which seems to be generated by your publication is getting quite boring.

Southampton FC will not inform you of anything newsworthy because they don't like you.

Time to move on, I think you need to instruct your sports editor to go and do some real journalism instead of persisting with negative reporting of a non story.

Pathetic attempt at some 'Balanced' reporting.
The Echo must be devastated that most sensible fans do support Adkins and won't jump on their manufactured campaign of unrest.

As hard as it might be for you bitter lot, try to pen a more comprehensive, positive account of the real support from the vast majority of fans.

I like Nige - he's likeable person!
He isn't from Southampton - but has embraced everything good about the club and recognises the importance of the fans.
I can see it hurts him when we lose - but he always tries to be positive. Under difficult circumstances, he must be fuming at our ability to capitulate, commit suicide at the back! But he keeps his calm and moves on!
He's the right man for me - the players clearly like him, Cortese seems to like him, and if the poll isn't prove the vast majority of the fans are behind him!
The tide will turn - we haven't become a bad team overnight. We had lapses of concentration throughout the last 2-seasons - but the quality wasn't there to punish us...
New ball game this Premiership lark!
Must confess I can't understand why we are in this position - perhaps our high intensity game plan has gone since we got promoted.
Haven't noticed the same intensity - but we did wobble last year when teams got at us! We need to control more games and not be on the back foot so much - I wonder if the players are frightened of making a mistake?
Anyway my thoughts for today - we need to up our intensity and control the game. To do that we need to keep the ball better and not get all flustered and panic when we lose it. We do seem to give it away very cheaply at times!

How many times does it have to be said that Adkins and NC were not unaware that the defence needed strengthening during the summer? Unfortunately, the targets we had went elsewhere (including Buttner, who was playing in the Champions League for Man U last night). Why that happened I have no idea and I suspect that most of the commenters here, and the Echo, don't know either.

I have every confidence that Adkins is doing his best to sort our defence out and also have no doubt that they will try to strengthen this area in January.

Until then, we need to stay behind the man who brought us up from League 1 playing a style of football that's exciting to watch.

I don't know why the club won't talk to the Echo. Seems a pointless spat. But I think Mr Murray knows that the refusal of the club to answer the Echo's questions has little bearing on the future of NIgel Adkins and should stop stirring.

Thanks Adam for publishing the results fair and square. The negative lot have forgotten the word support and the word loyalty.

Many forget that when Kev Keegan returned to Newcastle he lost 8 straight games before switching to 433 and picking up the odd win... a change is the last thing we want when we desperately need to lads to up their game and concentrate.. continuity is essential. Add at the summer window and we'll be away up the ladder.

Watch the recent games again.. look out for some positives and stop blame mongering.. it's much more tolerable and enjoyable. There are positives in the negative aspects.. Yoshi has been covering ground and getting involved up front, though out of position and caught out a couple of times he is showing some pace and man he can wallop the ball.. Jayrod for a young man is coming on great.. he is quick turns well and is starting to gain confidence around the box.. reminds me a lot of Martin Chivers a bit flimsy at times but clever.. he's going to get a hatful of goals for us this season and Rickie coming on fresh second half is not something to scoff at. Alternating the guys is fine by me.. it is a long season.

Bring on Spurs.. let's ambush them good and proper.

I didn't have much chance to follow the West Ham game, but it seemed to me that the Lambert business was part of a predetermined strategy that went horribly wrong, thanks to two minutes of defensive stupidity just after half time, I don't think that was in the script and messed up what may have been a reasonable plot. It surprised me in fact that it was 0 0 at half time considering the starting eleven, but up until then, it was working. Just like the old AP days, there was no suitable Plan B, even when we pulled one back, it didn't seem likely we were going to get a result. I think pony tails on players should be banned then defenders wouldn't get the idea to tug them! Let's hope we get the strategy right on Sunday, and avoid those expensive lapse of concentration moments and maybe we can get a result.

There is more chance of Elvis turning up in Tesco than Cortese doing this.

I was thrown out of Sunday School for demanding that the teacher held a vote on whether we thought Jonah really sat in the belly of a whale for three days and nights - and even if he did, wouldn't it have been a much better miracle if Jonah had swallowed the whale?

Personally, I don't really mind that the Echo is forced to maintain a healthy professional distance from the club. The press exists to hold power to account and ask questions which may at times be uncomfortable but are asked for the greater good. It's hard to do this if it's forced to tow a particular line or offer nothing but sycophancy to the organisation it's covering.

If The News, for example, had been asking more questions of previous Pompey regimes rather than going "Oooooh, wow! An FA Cup - let's print some pictures of that blue fellow with the bell" then it probably wouldn't have spent the last three years on its knees.

The public was rightly appalled by the Leveson revelations, but I think that with the Savile 'debacle' people are coming round to the idea that the press is necessary and should, sometimes, have gone much further than it did. So although it might sometimes annoy us, it's the Echo's job to be critical.

Crass journalism, a non story and a boring thread. Everything was said yesterday. I suggest people stop looking on this site and watch the BBC Saints page instead. It usually gets the stories well before the Echo even gets a hint of it and in the past has even got that story up before the OS. If people really want to help they can go to St Mary's on Sunday and become an extra defender by creating enough noise to put the willies up Spurs!

only1chopper says...

With all the talk of getting more defenders in and a new defensive coach is common, starting with a different approach to games from last season is fresh and exciting, but when these things don't work/materialise, then we start to question the tactics, the players, the manager even the chairman. Unless we know what goes on behind the scenes or we get a proper report from the OS, then on speculation can occur.
But as we are all entitled to our opinions, then i feel just trying a 442 formation, it would beef up the midfield and reduce the threat of the opposition wide men and not leave our frail fullbacks exposed all the time, and it is a system that has worked for us for the past 2 seasons. Plus the opposition will not be expecting it and will (hopefully) be a bit confused on how to handle it. some might say this is a step backwards after all the hard work they have done in training, but hey, it clearly ain't working all the time, so just give it a try.
NA should still be in charge, lets face it, he has not been able to field a full strength side yet, get lee and cork and gaston back and then see how we fare!

I wonder if it's possible to arrange an official fans boycott of the Echo? Not permanently but just to show the paper that they should try to be more balanced (not biased in favour of Saints, but certainly not biased AGAINST Saints as they currently appear to be).

If all Saints fans refused to buy the paper or use the website for, say, two weeks, do you think that would have the effect of showing the Echo how much they rely on the fans to exist?

Do you think many fans would actually sign up to this idea?

If 'Unity is Strength', then is it any wonder that Saints are in the relegation zone?

THAT is a very good point about the song. They've really tried to take it over, haven't they?

Well if they think we're going to let them come to our place and sing a poor imitation of our song back to us then we should tell them to shove it up their arse sideways and drown them in noise.

(Interestingly, mind, the history of British pop music has consisted mainly of white British people selling a poor imitation of black American music back to white America, but that's another story...)

Most concerning thing about the article is not the 78% of sensible people who want NA at the helm ,it's the 22% deluded people that want to get rid of a manager 8 games into our first premiership campaign since nearly going bust and following 2 successive promotions . Most of our players are still the same players we used to gain promotion from both divisions and NA quite rightly is showing loyalty to them , maybe they are not all premiership quality but you can destroy team spirit by making wholesale changes too quickly, he will get it right keep the faith , COYR

I won't buy this newspaper again.
The Echo have let people have a say and published the result. Can't fault democracy.

I was thrown out of Sunday School for demanding that the teacher held a vote on whether we thought Jonah really sat in the belly of a whale for three days and nights - and even if he did, wouldn't it have been a much better miracle if Jonah had swallowed the whale?

I was not only silenced, but had my pocket money stopped for two weeks by my dad for lipping the teacher.

If the Echo had a religion page, there would be a vote on this issue - and about that conversation Balaam had with his donkey.
and mosses parting the red sea
Actually I'm fairly happy with that one - the sudden appearance of a bridge or a tunnel would have been more obvious, but less miraculous.

I did enjoy "The Miracle of St Marys" the night before last. We were 7-0 down at half time and then for a fifteen munute spell every single thing we tried to do worked and everything Spurs tried didn't. Rickie's ninth goal in our 25-7 win was direct from a corner. It was a Spurs corner at the Chapel end and Rickie's header out rocketed all the way into the Northam end net.

And how we all laughed when Bale missed an open goal sitter from 2 feet when that ferret ran up his shorts! Ha ha - that trainer didn't have a clue how to get that ferret off Bale's todger. And the fans loved that "Bale's only 'alf a cockney now" chant.

I just wish I hadn't woken up so soon.

Cortese, end all the speculation and uncertainty, extend Nigel's contract by 2 years, talk to Nigel and in the short term bring in a respected coach with PL experience, (we haven't go anyone at SMS), to help improve defensive tactics and to get Nigel accustomed to the PL speed and skills.
Surely inspiring confidence is better than ruling by fear.
Such a move would win the support of the vast majority of supporters, change the atmosphere at SMS over night, and hopefully lift the whole team to achieving better results.
To do nothing is to accept the current situation.
I don't blame NA, his hands are tied it's now up to Cortese to show his true colours.

Agreed. We shouldn't sell out our principles of playing the right way, even if the price is Premier League survival.

But, like you, I don't think it's an either/or. We just need to stay in touch at Christmas, then bolster the defence and then absolutely smoke our way up the table. Remember - our fixtures in the final two months are an absolute piece of p1ss.

As I read these posts I've just been handed a rigid envelope. It's from the club and has a picture of Nigel, me and Seed the Small from last seasons awards dinner. Nigel has signed it and written 'Together as One!' I have no idea why it's taken them this long to send it but the timing and comment couldn't be more appropriate.

I sponsored the position of manager for about 7 years and last season was the first time that I had dinner with the same guy. Think about it - and then get behind this honorable man who will deliver for us.

NA has a little over a month - if results improve in November he should be given the opportunity to strengthen the squad and turn it around for a mid table finish. Good luck to him I hope he can do it he's a decent bloke. If he does not succeed in turning things around in November I reckon Saints will moving for Poyet or Benitez with Poyet favourite as he has been successful in blending good attractive football with defensive resilience. Notice how results have slipped recently for Brighton?

Only speculating, but I think NA is already getting too much input from other sources - I'd prefer if we could be confident he was just allowed to get on and do his job his way, in every area. Anyway, I think it is the lack of pace of some players that is the problem, not the coaching. I didn't enter the poll because of the wording of the questions: whether he's working 'under difficult circumstances' is unclear (especially if he was fully in control of summer spending, which was substantial), but neither do I want him to go. As a person and as a manager I back Nigel all the way and hope he is allowed to sort things out.

I wonder how the players feel, if they want him to stay they can show this on Sunday by everyone of them playing out of their skins for the man.

Correct. I for one want adkins to enjoy a glorious reign of many years. I am even prepared to accept relegation along the way (though it would be more difficult to come back than some seem to think). But I demand that adkins grows with the job, and shows the same evolution that we and he expect from first team players, who fight for their positions week in, week out.

The comparisons with lawrie mac, fergie and others are off the mark if adkins sticks to a system that has been proven to fail at this level: either our players are not good enough for now to execute, or the system itself is inappropriate for top flight football (I personally think the second. Our players are by and large a mid-league premiership side. The system is suspect -- look at the spaniards, they play without a recognized striker at all quite often).

Nige, we all want you to come out stronger. But you need to meet us halfway.

It starts with a point against spurs please. Or, at the very least, a strong performance at the back with one goal conceded or less.

I support the echo. They ran a great poll. And they consistently provide a forum for the best exchange of views about saints anywhere.

Even more importantly, a free press is part of the bedrock of our society. The story they wrote that started the war was no big deal. Cortese chose to make it a big deal.

Even (or even especially) cortese needs to be kept in check, as chairman, and a strong local newspaper is a part of that.

The idea that the echo should adopt cortese's limitations on its freedom to report is orwellian at best. So think carefully whose side you are on.

I had my concerns about NA being up to the job in the premiership and said so on here, and I got some stick of course.
We saw the team struggle at the end of the championship season...it was to close for us at the end, and his tactics concerned me, once again, I said so.
NA didn't know if he would be able to cope in the premiership during Saints first season there, and nor did we.
NA is a " great chap ", popular with all, and has done so well, but now he needs help in the TOP division, AND SO, I want NC to ask Steve Coppell to join Saints in a joint manager role, IF NA / NC would agree.
Nigel is already Saints through and through, our kind of man, and I don't want him to go, but if results and conceded goals continue, he surely will!

Up the Saints.

Clarke Kent or Clark Kunt, whatever, he’s an irrelevant tosser.
The only facts of the matter that the skunt needs to be concerned with in our business is that there is a Saints shirt, Kryptonite and a pair of my deeply soiled pants buried in the centre circle at Farton.
It seems to be working a TREAT so far!!!

Try minus 10 points to follow, if on the small chance you don’t get liquidized, and if you stop cheating the system by loaning players that you can’t afford to the unfair advantage over your honest opposition.

Good for you' but it appears they are getting a few points on the board so i dont see the relevance
The relevance is:
Try minus 10 points to follow, if on the small chance you don’t get liquidized, and if you stop cheating the system by loaning players that you can’t afford to the unfair advantage over your honest opposition.
You skunts are like Lance Armstrong, but believe me, he has far more silverware to return than you.
Why are you bothered about pompey,im not, are you a mush on southsea beach as you never stop talking about them.
Bothered, am I bothered. Talk to the hand, Talk to the hand.
You are a sad skunt that has to keep reinventing yourself through tedious new reincarnations of user names and boring the t!ts off us on here with your insecurities.
The funny thing is we suss you straight away ... Small town boy, small town football team, small town intellect and small peni$ ..... And you say you’re not bothered about Poopey, ..... Small mind, small memory, BIG LIAR
There you go again talking about pompey, i dont give a stuff about them but you are obssessed
Your user name gives it away. All skunts when using the phrase 'I for one' change it to I 4 1 as a symbol of the derby score line. You've been sussed so swim off back under your rock.
Have you thought that may be a house number ? obviously not.

All this poopey and skunt tripe that imbeciles log on here is irrelevant and is best ignored.
I do not apologise for having a superior brain, intellect, experience and knowledge of the game.
Maybe some lesser mortals will eventually wake up to reality but just to help you along here are some facts:-
1 NA is a good manager and has the ability to become the best Saints have ever had, as far as I am aware, no other Saints manager has achieved back to back promotions.
2 NA is finding it difficult to adapt to life in the PL, the difference between the Championship and the PL is about 100 mph, proved by the fact
that many PL players are paid £200k a week
3 There is no one at SMS with PL experience, NA obviously needs time to adapt to life in the PL but time is not on his side.
4 The constraints of the transfer window dictate no new signings
( except for out of contract players) are allowed before January.
5 NA needs support and help NOW, the easiest way is to bring in an experienced, respected, PL coach to assist him on a short term basis
6 NC can end all the speculation over NA's future by granting him a two year extension to his contract NOW.
7 The confidence boost this would give to NA, the team and the supporters is incalculable
8 As proved by the Echo's poll most supporters want NA to stay
9 The fly in the ointment is NC whose style of management and customer relations belong in the stone age
9 If NC in his shortsighted, bean counting way, sacks NA it would be a disaster for SFC, there is simply no one with a magic wand waiting in the wings
10 Those who say it would be OK to be relegated with NA and bounce back are deluded --the Championship is the most difficult league to get out of and Saints could spend years in the wilderness.
11 IMO there is no one either available or better to manage the Saints than NA --- with all the money spent on new players look how Sparky is strugging at QPR
12 Back NA to the hilt and get Cortese to appreciate the respect and support the supporters have for him
13 Sitting on hands and doing nothing is merely accepting an average of 3 goals against meaning Saints have to score 3 to draw and 4 to win, a ridiculous prospect
14 Back NA there is no other viable altenative!

Echo, 9 of your last 12 story lines have been about Nigel staying or going in one form or another.

Time to move on please.
I heard on the grapevine that Nigel and Nicola usually have their morning meetings talking through the partition of adjacent toilet cubicles at the office.

Nigel is taking charcoal tablets to bind himself up a bit because he thinks Nicola might do the nasty and sack him in mid dump and then demand he leaves the building immediately.

Nigel knows full well that if he's filmed by the BBC running out of St Marys with his trousers down and looking like he's been sitting on a big Marmite pot, he will become a bit of laughing stock and will find it tricky getting another Prem appointment.

I have not tipped the Echo off on this one, but I do think they should criticise Nicola severely if he does not let Nige finish his dump and wipe his bum - and thus force such an undignified exit.

So, decisive end games by New Year,
with QPR Swansea Norwich.
It's not easy.
If we fail to get points in next 3 matches drastic measures must be taken immediately .
I see we have "record" for number of goals conceded in the first 8 matches of any Premier season.

Well sometimes hearing the truth can be difficult. Football is a result driven business, failure to achieve those results means the manager has to pay the price. Leave it to long then you dont give a new manager the time to turn it around. In any business (and football is a business) targets are set if they are missed then those responsible have to be replaced. No room for sentiment.

Quite a few of the sack sect were actually Saints fans who have a different opinion to the majority, if they are proved right in the future the rest of us will have put our hands up and admit we got it wrong. Only time will tell who got it right. Your vote probably just nullified one of theirs so no great deal. Thanks for taking an interest in a decent way and admitting your methods, a refreshing change from the false WUMs that aren't exactly what they try to make us believe they are.

Well I am a Pompey fan (obviously from my username) and I voted FOR Nigel to stay as manager, because I am enjoying watching him out of his depth for your baptism of fire in Premier League hell... so you can't conclude that only 25% of people on here are Pompey.
It's much better than Poopee's hell in League 1, & even lower to follow after PST fails due to lack of interest & the club is liquidated.

After that, only 25% of Nottarf Krap will be occupied.

It was only the 10pt deduction that relegated us last season and this season we will easily get enough points to survive another one. Meanwhile, the Dortmund-Madrid game is worth watching if you have the right, er, satellite, er, subscription. That Lewandowski bloke looks good, 30 goals last season, why doesn;t Nicola sign him for you (£12M and £70K/week should do it) and he can play up front alongside Trickie Rickie and Dyno-Rod.

As much as I like NA, I feel that he is ot of his depth in the premiership. I could see that the players we had in defence were not good enough for the prem and we should have been buying players with premier league experience. We defo needed a keeper to keep KD on his toes and we needed central defenders with premier league experience. Once we have these types of players we would push ourselves up the league. Its just shame we didn't focus on the back first ala George Graham. Yeah I'm surprised to be quoting him but he di have a point. I also think we should stick to 442 and knock the zonal marking on the head cos its ****. We should also start with Lambert because he's the best striker we have. Would love to see Adkins succeed but I fear it may go back to the bad old days of appointing idiots like Hoddle, Wigley, Redknapp and any other clueless idiot as a short term basis. If Cortese does pull the trigger we should have a look at that bloke who used to manage at the Nou Camp.

Totally agree with comments on formation 4 4 2 or even 5 4 1,but choose one stick to it work the players into that system and if works keep it...
what we dont want is swopping it back and forth.
I think we need to forget the attacking element and work on midfield and defense ,holding up the ball and hit teams on the break when we can.
If this is boring and results in 1.1 ,s and 0.0,s then id take em at the moment.
Its got to be better than scoring 2 and losing by 4.

I just looked at the page, and it is sickening. Yes I've been a vocal critic of Guly for a long time, but my criticism is directed at his underperformance on the pitch and unprofessional behaviour off it. If he plays better in the future and earns us desperately-needed points, I'll be delighted to revise my opinion. You and every decent fan on here, would love to see Guly perform to his best capability, but he has never been played where he is best at and it gives the impression he isn't very good, he is underperforming, but circumstances have resulted in other players failing to give the 100% needed in the Premier also. After this I cannot see him ever wanting to play for us again, but if he does and wins over the fans, I for one would be immensely proud of him, but he would be justified to walk away and do it elsewhere. As he is unlikely ever to have the ability to respond himself you have to think that this cowardly act is all the more despicable.

i do think N A is working for a dictator in very hard conditions but he has what he has n thats that, he needs to get the best out of them and get results which he isnt. every one can see where the problems are- other teams bombing down the flanks- where their is little cover or no cover for our full backs, that was exposed badly against everton fulham westham. he must see where our weakness is and to date hasnt set the team up to counter these problems, that IS his fault. if he dosent see it he goes or if he cant set the team up to defend these areas then he does not have the tactical awareness at this level then he has to go. if he is being undermined by N C then he should resign to protect his rep. hes a nice guy and i really like him. unfortunately this isnt enough. he keeps sayin were score goals but we aint much good at that either 6 chances go begging before we score, its not like were scoring 4 goals a game so it doesnt matter if we conceed 3, theirs been worse squads than ours in the primier league ask roberto martinez, mick mcarthy.......... but what these managers know the weaknesses and set up the side to protect that. our players are running round like headless chickens with out a game plan and that is NA responsibility, come were going into november were have 4 points thats the reality then by christmas the difference may be to late for some one else to save us from relegation. ill leave it to every one else to make their judements
I found out today that he is not being undermined by Nicola.... thats all total B.S. The show on matchdays is 100% Nigel.
then he aint good enough. ta ta

Why would we want a new manager with prem experience when we want to play like barca or better?

I'm 100% for Nigel.. he's gutsy enough to constantly think a year ahead.. a proper chess player. Our players are the ones that have to step up a notch or some will be replaced at Christmas for sure..

BLUE FEW....
You take a classic standard and mercilessly change it's lyrics to suit an emotional outpouring against a local rival who are struggling to survive yet try to mock us from the depths of their despair. You deliberately mock their lack of playing staffand try to touch on their most sensitive pain. It's cruel and heartless.

Keep it up chaps.

Just a thought that I don't think has appeared b4. Perhaps NC and NA are almost as clever as me. We have sold hardly any of our promotion team and have added to it with some great signings. (Billy Sharp, Aaron Martin, Lee Barnard all on loan) Just maybe they have realised we are a bit ahead on the 5 year plan and have a plan B in place to ensure an immediate return if the worst happens. Stick with what we have. They've performed miracles for this club.!
